Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

13 month wakeful?

Anyone else's LO go through a night wakeful period at 13 mos or around the time LO started walking?  I know that it's common for infants to go through a wakeful period when they are going thru a growth spurt or when they hit developmental milestones but I don't hear much about this happening with toddlers.  DD has had quite a few nights recently of waking up at around midnight and just wanting to PLAY!  It is just like the time she went through the "4 month wakeful".  There's nothing we can do for her.  Nothing calms her, she cries and screams when we try to put her back in the crib but once we pick her up she is happy and babbling and trying to jump out of our arms!  She recently took her first steps so I'm just thinking that might have something to do with the wakefulness.  She is just so excited about life right now!

Re: 13 month wakeful?

  • My DS isn't going through this but I have a friend who said her DS does this too, and he is 14 months old. I'd have to agree with what you said- maybe just the excitement of knowing that your LO can move on their own now is exciting! :)

  • DS did this when he started walking, but I'd hear him fuss for a few seconds and he'd go right back to sleep.  Always happened at the same time every night (2am-ish).  It went on for about a week.

He'll just be turning 13 months on the 17th though, so we could have something in store for us later.  Either way, he's pretty good about falling back asleep on his own unless he's in pain (usually from teething).

  • My LO took her first steps on her own June 17 and just started walking all the time July 7 and her sleep has been messed up for the last month.  She used to wake up consistently twice a night and for the last month it has been all over the place, waking up all different times and having trouble sleeping in her crib.  But, she's a crappy sleeper, so I'm not entirely sure what it ever is.

  • We have but only because she's teething. Poor baby!
  • Wakeful periods can pretty much happen at any time. My dd refused to sleep during the day right before she walked at 9 months.
  • My daughter apparently thinks sleep is for sissies. It's going to make me go insane. I don't know if it's teething, growth spurt, shots or what.

    *sigh*
