Do's / Don'ts with IUI

What did the doctor tell you that you can/shouldn't/can't do before & after your IUI? I know that a bunch of ladies are on the "drink 'till it's pink" wagon, but are you still that way now that you are having IUIs or IVFs?

DH planned a 30th birthday party for me and if all goes well, my 1st IUI will be a few days before. I know that even if it worked, it would not be soon enough to have implanted, thus no blood supply shared. He is now worried that we should push back IUI #1 as he thinks that I shouldn't be drinking at anytime during the cycle. He basically planned it to be a big drinking night to make up for the fact that my bachelorette party was a bomb; I only had 2 drinks all night ,we went to a club that I hated, and all the girls became tired after an hour so they left. So, he figuered that a 30th b-day party would be a way to make-up for that suckiness.

Obviously, I would not risk anything if I shouldn't drink ( I'm not an alcoholic, after-all) but I'm just curious as to your thoughts.

Re: Do's / Don'ts with IUI

  • As far as drinking I think its a personal choice. I was told I could resume normal activity but I chose not to drink.

  • The pamphlet I got from the RE said not to drink.  I know a lot of people do, but I just don't.  However, I was at a wedding this weekend and did have 1 drink.

  • I personally don't drink while cycling, but not because my doctor told me not to just because I don't want to risk anything.

Do you have to drink at your 30th bday?  I mean I could see having one or two no problem, but I guess I don't get why your bday would need to be a drinkfest, but that is just me I guess.

  • my RE is in the drink til pink camp - but in moderation/socially. (specifically during my first IUI - like the day of - we flew off to vacation and he specifically said "I know you are going to the beach. enjoy yourself. have a glass of wine at dinner. have a pool drink - but take it easy. )

he also wanted no exercise for 1-2 days after - and then resume all normal activity.

  • I don't remember my RE saying anything about not drinking.  But the meds made me feel like garbage and so I didn't drink.  I don't think one night will hurt your chances.  And as you say it is not implated at that point.  Also, if you want to drink and don't because of the IUI and then have a bfn that cycle you might regret not having a drink.   IMO.  I also have made choice not to drink during my cycles.  It makes the beer I have after a bfn taste even better.

  • It's definitely a personal decision and I've done both. As you can see from my siggy it didn't make a difference in the end result, IMO. I don't go out and get wasted by any means but if I want a drink or 2 or a glass of wine or beer during the 2WW I usually have it. My RE says resume all normal activities after an IUI but that everything should be done in moderation.

Hope that helps, I hope you have a good 30th birthday!

  • My first RE said to resume all normal activity. Including alcohol. My new RE said no to alcohol and exercise. My first two IUI's I did drink in the 2ww and my last two IUI's I didn't, and I won't for my future procedure(s)... I do think it's a personal choice, I'm just to the point where I'm trying to be as safe as possible...

  • I don't like to drink while cycling because I don't want to have any doubts that I did everything I could to get PG. I think you need to do what you are comfortable with :)
  • I am of a slightly different camp altogether. I am not a big drinker to begin with, but I do love me some champagne. So I will have a glass of champagne if the opportunity arises in the 2ww. My RE says it is fine to act normally during the 2ww.

But I am also of the camp that thinks a glass of wine here and there while you are PG is ok. I have heard several doctors say that having a small glass of wine per week while you are PG is fine, and can actually be good for you, so I figure why not? I don't totally subscribe to the idea that PG ladies need to eliminate entire food groups out of their diet either. But that is just me.

  • My RE has never told me either way.  During my first 3 IUI's I did not drink at all.  My last IUI I drank a few days after (sort of similar to your situation).  It was for a friend's engagement party.  I had planned to only have one glass of wine (I figured hey, OB's even say you can have a glass of wine here and there while pregnant).  Anyway, at the party, people kept asking us when we were having kids (obviously no one knows about our IF), and I wound up drinking a whole lot more than I should have (out of self pity).  Wouldn't ya know, that IUI I got ku!!  RE assured me it was fine.

Personally, I think it's ok, as long as if you did get ku that you would not obsess over the fact you drank a few days after your IUI and would worry to death (it's the worrying part that is not healthy).  If you would, then I would push back the IUI for your own sanity and if you are more laid back, then I think it's fine.  Either way, GL!

  • We are big social drinkers, I've tried to stick with wine and limit myself to a glass or two here or there but have tried to really cut back.  When I first asked RE he said it's fine just don't get wasted, the nurse looked at me like I was nuts and said I was trying to grow eggs so it may not be a good idea to drink at all.  The only other stipulation I had was not to swim the day of and take it easy the first 24 hours.  Golfing was approved but no marathons etc.

  • my meds read  no alcoholic beverages....i choose not to drink as a lifestyle choice.

are you comforatble with not drinking more than 1-2 while enjoying the company of your friends?

i personally would not want to push back iui efforts just for one night.

  • My 3rd IUI was 2 days after my 30th birthday party and the cycle I got pregnant on of course. I did have a few drinks, maybe 2, but knew that my IUI was going to be any day.  I hate to say put off your life, but I don't think I would drink a whole lot either way.
