Success after IF

Mommies who are PG w/ or already had #2

How long did you wait until you were able to pick up DC #1 after ET?  I ask b/c when I was PG with Nico I was told I couldn't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk for 6 wks.  It is going to be kind of hard this time since I have a child who needs to be picked up.  I am covered through next week with help, but that is certainly not 6 wks.  Just curious what everyone else was told.

  • I didn't do IVF but I bet you are fine- you pick him up everyday... it's not a new weight for you to carry. There is no way around it I bet!

  • When we did our FET our dr. said nothing more than 10lbs from ET to beta-when I asked about my 30lb toddler, they said to try to avoid it as much as possible, but since I am used to lifting/carrying her, it shouldn't be an issue as long as I was careful.
  • I wasn't told not to lift him, just to not overdo it wrestling, etc. with him.  I did try to avoid lifting him as much as possible for at least a week, but I still picked him up here and there (like into and out of the crib at nap time or onto the changing table for messy changes).  The only way that I restricted was making him go up the stairs on his own and climb into his highchair (with my hand to assist).
  • I was very nervous about this when I was newly pg with DD.  I think I was told to avoid as much lifting as I could for the first few days to a week after ET.  They never really told me not to lift him specifically.
  • I didn't do IVF this time, but was told by me RE nurses to not lift more than 20lbs - maybe 10lbs...I know they told me that before I had my SCH (clot), but after that I couldn't lift ANY lbs.  it was hard.  did I lift him?  yeah, but i minimized it.  I think they tell all IVF patients (so me included since I was in the RE's care not to lift more than 10lbs...)I was like 'what? I have a child to take care of.  My RE did tell me to take care of my child.

I still minimize lifting him but I had a SCH and complicated pregnancy plus bedrest.  even that, they didn't know my history and still told me not to lift him much.  I drop him off at daycare or pick up and get him out of the car....but I don't lift him to change diapers.  I either change him on the floor or I wait until he has climbed on his bed and then I nab him.

I still don't care him up our stairs daily.  Either DH does or I make him walk/crawl up or down.

  • I wouldn't try to ever lift him from the ground in a bad way, if that makes sense.  my peri even told me that later on in pregnancy, it doesn't mean you will lose the baby, but if you do that dead lift (straight lift of him from the ground) that you could really hurt your back.  He said baby would be fine, but you would be in pain.  he said that is why they tell ppl not to lift...and that is my high risk peri.

he is old enough that he is probably used to climbing stairs, etc.  DS used to crawl down on his butt, but now he walks down the stairs holding one of our hands.
