Food allergies....confusion after testing

I had some (totally wrong) concerns about food allergies, so we went to the allergist and they did skin testing for the big stuff - nuts, shellfish, eggs, wheat, dairy, and a few others.  I'm really happy because it all came back ok - he didn't show allergies to any of them.

So my question is this - they said he's fine and not allergic to these things, just don't give whole peanuts because they're a choking hazard.  But you hear so many warnings about kids exposing kids until they're older, that they can become sensitized.  I trust the results of his testing, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm going to feed him something with peanuts now and he's going to develop an allergy later.

I'll ask my ped at our 15 m, but does anybody have experience or words of wisdom?

Re: Food allergies....confusion after testing

  • Did have a reaction to anything, they exposed him to in the test?  If he didn't chances are he doesn't have an immune system that is prone to allergies.  Honestly we all run the risk that some day a new allergy is going to pop up.  I know that mine have changed over the years. B's allergist also told us that his are likely to change as well.  I am crossing my fingers that B grows out of his food allergies.

Since B has an allergy prone immune system our allergist recommend that we be careful when giving him nut products.  We still give them to him, but know to watch out for a reaction.

  • Nothing came up at all, not even dog, which I was sure about!!  Thanks so much for the help.  It's just a little nerve wracking.....they tell you peanuts are going to kill your kid if you give them before they're older, then suddenly you have a free pass?  I'm having a hard time making that compute.

    Good luck to your DS!

I would just keep bendryl of hand when giving him nuts.  You can give more than the recommend dose if they are having an allergic reaction.

  • Good to know!  I'll put that on my list before I give him anything.
