help - we both cried for hours last night

so every DS nurses pretty much from 7-9pm every night then typically falls asleep around 9pm.  well last night this went on until after midnight.  every time i'd lay him down he'd lay quietly for about 2 mins then instantly start screaming hysterically.  i'd try burping him and sometimes would get a burp but mostly he'd end up spitting up (chunky white stuff, not the milk he just drank).  he just seemed so upset.  he'd fall asleep just fine after eating but wake up again hysterical.  i ended up crying with him from about 10-midnight because i was so frustrated and didn't know what to do.  i gave mylicon twice and swaddled.  any ideas?  he's typically an "easy" baby - just the normal crying of a newborn but nothing like last night.

  • He's nursing for two hours straight? Is he stopping and dozing off a lot?

Kinley did this - it would take forever, and it was the only feeding she did it at. I quit BFing her and gave her a bottle of breast milk if I had it or formula if not, and it took her a lot less time to eat, and I could see just how much she was getting. Then she'd sleep right after it.

  • Did you try proping him up in his boppy, a bouncer or swing?  He may have just been having some reflux or tummy problems and laying down may have just exasterbated the situation.   Also try Gripe Water, our daughter had horrible gas around 2-8 weeks and we found Mylicon did nothing for her but Gripe Water was a God send.  If it is still bad today call your pedi. Totally this. We're both much happier now that I do bottles of EBM instead of BFing at night.

  • DD did this last week and I was so upset too. She was happiest hanging out on my shoulder, but I couldn't do that all day! She just seemed so uncomfortable and didn't really seem to know what she wanted. She has been great since Monday night so I'm convinced it was a growth spurt (they go through one at 3-4 weeks). I hope your LO gets better soon! I really sucks to see them so unhappy and not know what to do!

ETA: DD also was cluster feeding all evening and into the night. After a couple of days I started to pump a little and put it in the fridge so my nipples could have a break every once in awhile!

  • I've definitely been through this...usually around growth spurts. I hope you get a break soon!

In the meantime, a couple of thoughts. When things get really bad, you could have DH take LO for an hour or two to relieve you in the middle of the night, especially if you're pumping a little bit. Although I had a difficult time getting much out with the pump that early, even just an ounce or two will keep LO from screaming too much while you get a break. Even if DH just stays up to keep you company sometimes that helps.

If you can tolerate it, I'd try to avoid supplementing with formula 'til 6 weeks to give your milk supply the chance to establish itself. Even now though a bottle of formula every couple of days won't sabotage your milk supply.

Maybe that's my problem, too! I'm going to have to try this. . .
