1st bday gift-moving to Dubai

A friend of mine has a LO turning one next month.  They are also moving to Dubai at the end of next month for two years (teaching abroad).  Any ideas on what I could get him for his birthday? Maybe things to keep him occupied on the plane??  Any ideas would be great!!  Thanks!!

magnadoodle, portable dvd player. I know everyone isn't a fan of tv for a 1 y/o, but that is one long flight! A family member went there from LA it was almost 18 hours.

maybe one of those photo albums for LOs (you know, the kind that are plastic/water-proof) that they could put pics of family and friends in for the LO

I would just ask the parents what he could use. I know packing to move overseas can be a real challenge so I'd want to make sure it's stuff that would be useful, wouldn't take up too much space, etc.

When SIL was moving overseas we gave her luggage for Christmas so she had something to pack all her Christmas presents in.  She was super grateful for it.  The other thing would be a protable DVD player and or a season of the childs favorite show to watch on the plane.  DD was great flying two weekends ago week except when we were landing.   Having Fraggle Rock to distract her with was awesome.  She couldn't hear it but she would scream and scream and scream and then stop, see the Fraggles, calm down enough to drink water and pop her ears.  It worked every time.

I taught abroad but without a LO.  However, I have travelled on long flights with a one year old (to India- a total of 36 hours door-to-door).  I am assuming they will have plenty of toys, but soft books about planes or a Rubbabu mini-plane would be a cute idea.  Luggage is also a great idea.  Maybe order labels for their stuff from Mabel-labels.  If I think of anything else I will let you know.

FYI- some things I really appreciated getting from overseas were packages of spices etc that I couldn't get in China (Italian spice blend, Cumin etc).
