West Nile

I know there are reports about West Nile in Indiana and my co-workers husband was just diagnosed with it. So my question is-is there bug spray for LO's out there or do they have to be a certain age to put it on? Or jsut stay in our bubble until misquito season is over! TIA!

Re: West Nile

  • My pediatrician told me (Emma was only 3 months old at the time) that as long as it said "family" on it, it was fine, just don't put it on hands, feet, face.  I think the bottles now say the same thing for 6 mos old and up.  I know Off and Cutter both make family sprays/wipes.

  • I've seen all natural ones at Whole foods. And they have those fan things now (from Off) I can't tell you if either of them works though (Sorry!)
  • I don't care for the idea of putting bug spray on Andrew - maybe it's not as bad as I imagine - but I saw some California Baby bug spray at Target and bought that. I haven't tried it to see if it really works though!  I'm guessing it does as I like their other products!
  • I was just going to ask this question here. I know my pedi told me that I could use bug spray on the LO but I don't remember what kind.

I'd like to get the california baby version but I read an article recently that said most types of bug spray don't work. I'll have to do a little research.

  • CDC link - kiddo stuff is about 3/4 down the page:

    https://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/qa/insect_repellent.htm

I just skimmed it since I'm at work right now...didn't see it mentioned here, but our (poison center) recommendation when using repellents on kiddos is to also give them a bath/new clothes when you are done being outside.
