Sleep question: What's the best way to sleep when pregnant?

How do you sleep at night? I read it is best to be on your left side, but I find myself waking up on my back and even worse, on my stomach this morning. I think I might invest in a body pillow since I've heard it helps. I just get sharp pains in my hips if I stay in one position all night long. Anyone else care of share sleeping advice? TIA!

  • However I can get comfortable.  I noticed that lately I wake up on my back and it makes me feel really sick to my stomach when I do so I started sleeping with a pillow behind me so if I do roll over I land halfway on the pillow so it keeps me off my back.  I honestly sleep with about 6  pillows every night.  I have 1 under my head, 1 behind me, 1 under my belly, 1 between my legs, and a couple under my feet/knees because my feet are so swollen.  When my DH is actually home he doesn't get much room in the bed with me.

Definitely this!  I ended up getting one of those massive pregnancy pillows, and actually got the one that's shaped like a U so it takes care of the pillow behind the back, which helped me a lot to keep from rolling on my back to some extent.  The pillow between your knees (if you can stand it, some can't) will probably help your hips.  The U shaped pillow is nice because if you're having swelling you can flip the pillow around so that the ends are by your head not your feet and prop your feet up to some extent (I've used a separate pillow for my head when I've done that though.  HTH!

  • Needless to say, sleeping isn't very comfortable for me these days, but I just basically switch from left to right all night long.  I never got a body pillow or anything and I still only sleep with my normal 2 pillows under my head.
  • I am having flashbacks of that damn hip pain!  Ugh, it was awful!  I used a body pillow and would lay on my left side, trying to position myself to where my weight was not directly on my hip bone.  I had to kind of lean forward, if that makes any sense.  And, I would kind of wrap my leg around the body pillow, so my knees weren't touching each other.  GL!
  • i sleep left side with 1 pillow under my head and 1 either under my belly or between my knees. i've been sleeping about 5-6 hours/night for the past 2 weeks and get up several times to re-arrange pillows.
  • I have the snoogle, which I call Oscar who I love.  It makes sleep easy for me.  I normally start kind of leaning on my side stomach at the start of the night before going to sleep and switching to my side.  DH is behind me when I face the wall, and Oscar is behind me when I face DH so I rarely wake up on my back.  I used to, and when I got Oscar, I found I don't as much and being on my side is so comfy again.

  • I was a back sleeper before I got pregnant and found myself on my back several times when I first got pregnant, your body will adjust to sleeping on your sides. I slept on my sides and would have to constantly switch sides because my hips and my legs would hurt so bad if i stayed on one side too long. good luck!
