Baby Names

sorry, another post from me

I appreciate you ladies answering my name posts.  We are having a hard time, so getting some opinions helps a lot.  :)

Ok, in our whole discussion of tons of names, we both like Nicholas.  But DH says he hates the nn Nick cuz every Nick he knew growing up was a jerk or something.  I'm not a nn person, but I think Nick is fine.  We both want to use the name Nicholas, but I think as the child grows up, even in the middle school stage, I think he will become Nick be default.  We both plan to call him Nicholas, but I think friends and other kids will shorten it regardless.  Whatcha think?

Re: sorry, another post from me

  • My brother is Nicholas, and my Mom said she named him with the intention of him always being Nicholas. That quickly ended once he started school. He only goes by Nick now (he's 30) and has for years and years.

That said though, I love the name Nicholas! I don't think Nick is all that bad either.

  • See, yeah, that's what I figured.  DH is thinking the same.  Like I said, I don't really like nn's, but I'd be ok with Nick.  DH, however, says that even in 10 years if LO became Nick, he'd still hate that name.  Why did those jerky Nicks from his past have to ruin it?  Wink

  • You can insist on Nicholas, call him Nicholas, but once he's in school he'll be called whatever the other kids call him. He may prefer Nick, who knows?

Personally, I love the name Nicholas, and have no problems with Nick. Great name!

I adore the name Nicholas, but I've also met a few Nicks I didn't like. I'm sure if people called my son Nick I would get over my aversion to it, but personally I would just choose a different name for my kid.

  • I think it's inevitable that Nicolas become Nick at some point or another in his life.

But I hope in our case that the rule won't apply, we're naming ours Anthony and I don't like the idea of him being called Tony.

    I guess we'll see...

  • I think it is inevitable that someone will call him Nick eventually. However, you can always stand by Nicholas and correct people- maybe condition him to prefer Nicholas too as he gets older :)
  • I think it's a lot more common these days for kids to go by full names rather than the "standard" nicknames (e.g. these days there are a lot of Andrews rather than Andys, Matthews rather than Matts, etc.). I have known boys named Nicholas who always go by Nicholas.

  • Good name.  He may get called Nick down the road but it's not inevitable. :-)
