Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

12 month appointment...

DD's appointment is tomorrow. I am a wreck. I couldn't even sleep well last night because it was all I could think about. These shots are going to be the worst now that she can actually talk and everything. What are your experiences? How many shots did your LO have to get and what happened?

Re: 12 month appointment...

  • The 12 month shots for us were really no worse than the others - a few minutes of crying, then he was distracted by toys/getting dressed to leave. By the time we were in the car he was his happy usual self!

  • The shots weren't any worse than before. I can't remember off hand how many he got, but I think it was 3.

    Try not to worry.

  • It wasn't too bad.  12 month was the first appointment DH was able to come along to, so that made it much easier than previous appointments.  DD cried for a minute after the shots, just like she always has.
  • The shots were the same as any other time. She cried for a couple minutes, we cuddled, got her dressed and she was fine by the time we were leaving the exam room. Our only problem was that they did a blood test and had pricked her finger. She kept trying to chew on the band aid on her finger, which caused her finger to keep bleeding. It didn't seem to upset her, but it looked like a crime scene in there for a couple minutes before the nurse got it re-wrapped.

  • For Ava it was business as usual...she didn't even cry when they did the finger prick for the lead testing...but Milina was a different story...she was a mess for the entire appt...but once we were out of there they both had a quick nap in the car and were just fine when we got home...til 24 hours later when Milina got a fever, followed by Ava getting one on day 2...I hope your experience is better!  The girls got 3 shots and had the finger stick/lead test...we are getting the MMR in august...
  • Why were you a wreck? Just because of the shots?

In my experience shots are no big deal. I've never been in the exam room when they've given a shot, (we sit in the doc's office talking) but I've never heard him cry longer than 10 seconds. They didn't seem to bother him afterwards. I've never really given them a 2nd thought.

I'm not crazy, I've just been a very bad mood for the last 40 years!
  • We had our 12-month on Friday.  The shots themselves weren't that bad - Liam cried while he was getting them, but he was happy by the time we got to the car.  The worst part was afterwards - he ran a temp between 102 and 104 for three days.  Horrible.  He was so miserable.

  • I feel you pain and I'm glad you posted this. My DS's appointment is tomorrow as well and I am dreading it!
  • DD just had hers yesterday. She got three shots in the arm (as opposed to the thighs, where she had been getting them. Nurse said it was because they didn't want to impede walking). She screamed and I cried (just being honest). The finger prick didn't hurt at all for her. She tried to eat the bandaid. LOL

Daddy held her and she still screamed a bit, but when she came to me she seemed to calm down. The worst part about it was that I think they have better memories now; I don't want her to fear going to the doctor.

  • The more relaxed you are the more your baby will be. No reason to get upset. They get 3 shots. We did it today. Baby will cry for a couple mins then will be fine.
  • Our 12mo shots were really no different than the others. The only difference was my lo had to give blood at 12mo. He really didn't cry or anything when they took blood, I was shocked, I thought he was going to scream bloody  murder.
