Yeah, in CA gift cards never expire - exactly because of the situation you're in. In fact CA also just passed a law that says if you have $5 or less left on a g.c. they have to give you the remaining balance back in cash if you ask for it.
It depends on the state and also on the store. Some places never expire (I just used an Olive Garden GC that was probably 5 years old) and some are only a year.
