Success after IF

toddler moms what would you do?

If your child was getting into his/her drawers and pulling clothes out during naps would you:

a.  put child locks on the drawers so he can't open it

b.  put the dresser in the closet (least favorite option)

c.  put the dresser in another room (also least favorite)

d.  something else

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! Re: toddler moms what would you do?

  • I would put a child lock on it.  Of course we haven't - we just let them get into the clothes and then put them back away when we leave the room.  Actually it was only once I was home for summer vacation that I realized they get into my underwear drawer most often.  My MIL has definitely seen my skivvies.

  • I'd opt to put child locks on the drawers.  We're considering doing the same already since Stella likes to open and clothes her drawers over and over again.  I'm afraid she's going to slam her fingers in them since she doesn't have a whole lot of control yet.

  • I would (and did) put child locks on.  Granted my DS knows how to open them and has actually broken a few in the kitchen.  It will at least slow him down
  • I saw the picture and I totally giggled! sorry

I would put child locks on it.

  • I just ler her empty them, and then I throw the clothes back in when she's done.

  • Right now I just pick them up after he throws them on the floor. However if it became a constant issue, I would use the child locks.

I think my concern is now that he has discovered what fun it is, he won't nap! I think we'll do the locks.

  • We put Sean's clothes in the closet, but he has never had a dresser in his room(too small).  Then we put locks on the closet doors.  He does however still get up and play with toys till he is actually tired, but puts himself back to bed in bed when he is ready.

  • I love my crib tents!  They can't get out of their cribs at night so no need to worry about dresser drawers.  Smile
  • d.  something else

This is where having a video monitor comes in handy.

When he's doing something naughty during nap time I watch for it, go in, stop him, make him clean it up and remind him that he has to stay in bed during nap time.

    Repeat.

    Repeat.

    Repeat.

    Repeat.

    I would correct the behavior.

There's a good chance that if you lock the dresser he's gonna find something else to do instead of stay in bed.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • This is why we STILL use the angelcare monitor with Griffin- because a) we'd know if he got out of bed b/c it would beep... and b) he won't get out of bed b/c he doesn't like hearing the alarm- he has not ever gotten out of bed since moving out of his crib - he calls for us when he's ready to get out.

    d.  I think my parents turned our dresser around, so the drawers were against the wall - not very convenient to get clothes out, but no way the kid can do it!

  • I would put locks on the drawers, and make sure the dresser was strapped to the wall.   Wouldn't want him to figure out that he can climb the drawers and cause even more havoc than messing up his clothes.
  • I'm all about correcting the behavior.  My son has to ask before he can get out of bed in the mornings or after a nap.  We had a few instances where he got out of bed and was goofing off so I put him back and told him he needed to call for me when he was done with his nap and it didn't take long for him to realize I'd always put him back into bed and soon enough he gave up.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I said this on your FB post about it, but this is exactly why E is still in his crib! :)

    Child locks, for sure!

  • I would probably put the child locks on the drawers and see how that works.  He may just end up finding something else to throw around though.  C&J are still in their cribs, I don't plan to give them any freedom in the bedroom anytime soon!
  • I would not put the locks on the draws. The only items we put locks in our house are the cabinets that have dangerous stuff. I would do time outs or something along that lines. Preston liked do exactly this and after repeatly telling no and time out, he no longer does this. I just feel if you put locks on it now once he he has mastered opening doors, he will just pull stuff out of other dressers in the house. I also don't want to take the chance of distroying the dressers since we paid a lot of money for them. And if Brighton is anything like Preston, he will figure out locks before you know it!

Ditto to ALL of this! I LOOOOVE my video monitor now that he is in a twin bed and I use the second camera for Lily's room.

BTW: Bright = too stinkin' cute!
