Andrew had surgery on Thursday to close his PDA valve. Everything went fine with the procedure, and as expected he struggled a bit the first few days afterwards. Well, today was a good day! They have weaned him totally from the pain meds, his blood pressure meds are way down, and he is doing well on the venitlator. The doctor told us today that we are over the hump from the surgery.
Next up...feeding! He'll be getting his first breast milk today (only 1cc every 12 hours!) through a feeding tube, and hopefully his digestive system will work the way is supposed to. They are also going to begin to try and wean him from the ventilator, since prolonged usage causes lung damage (although he is going to need help for awhile...his little lungs are not ready yet to take on breathing on his own.)
I think finally, today, DH and I exhaled, and began to let thoughts of "when we bring him home" creep into our minds. We know there are many more hurdles for him to face (and several months more in the NICU), but for today we are so proud of our strong little man!
