something comparable to North Face for toddlers/18-24m?

We spent way too much on coats last year. I'd like to get a multi-purpose coat for each child similar to a lightweight North Face (like the Denali fleece).  I don't see that they come in 12 or 18 mo sizes....is there something comparable?

TIA!

ETA:  by "spent too much" I mean each kid had multiple jackets/coats.  I want to buy one that will last all winter and is multi-purpose.  I don't care if it is $60-80.

  • I bought DS's coat from LL Bean last year.  It is lightweight, but warm.  It is a down coat, and should last him through this year too.

  • Patagonia has an adorable kid's line. I love their Baby Synchilla Fleece, and it comes in baby and toddler sizes.

  • I think L.L. Bean stuff is generally great gear for good prices.  And I'm sure they have something that has zip out fleece (or down) liners so you can make it warmer/cooler if needed.

I also LOVE Molehill Mountain Equipment gear but I shop for it at online sales.

  • I actually just picked up a Carter's fleece from Costo for $17.  It's super cute - very North Faceish - and it's reversible, which is nice.  I'd gotten DS1 a similar one two years ago and it still fits him (it was big on him when I got it and he's tiny) and I'd been thinking I'd have to get DS2 something for fall.  I was pretty stoked when I found it the other day.  I got DS2 kelly green/navy blue.  They had some really cute girly ones, too.
  • REI has some good ones, I buy them at the end of spring clearance for the following year.  I buy each kid a fleece, DD has a Columbia this year and an REI shell.  This may not work as well for you, since you live in a colder climate, but we only put one on if we were going to be in/out of the car, both if we were going to be outside.  The shells I bought are also rain jackets, so no need for that.  I buy up a size, so DD can wear hers for two years.  DS probably won't be able to, since he will gain more inches.  His fleece is a patagonia, only because I like the styling/weight, but the REI one we had last year still fits (this is not the same one we had, but similar, his had a hood).

Overall, I think Columbia has the best quality/style/value ratio.

Also try 6PM.com, Sierra Trading co, Altrec.com for deals on "last years" model.

  • I've bought ds a coat here:

You kind of just have to check back often though- their stock changes frequently and you never know what you're going to find.

  • We got DS a fleece from Lands End.  it worked great and they had a great sale around October I think.  They have a lot of selection too.

  • When Jackson was younger, we had an LL Bean fleece that was perfect.  Patagonia is another good option.

He has a NF fleece now and we love it!

  • I third the sierratradingpost.com vote.  Most of our gear wardrobe comes from there, honestly. . . and since we're close to the store (Cheyenne, WY) we get our orders in a day ;)

  • I bought DS a wonderful coat at Sam's Club. It was an Osh Kosh parka-ish coat. It had a snap-off hood, a zip-out fleece lining, and was a medium weight coat without the lining. I paid a whopping $25 for it, and it's big enough for him to wear this winter, too.

If I see them again this year, I'll buy him a bigger size, and one for DD, too.
