There was another post about yeast rashes on here and someone asked about how to treat it and about using cloth while they have the rash. I just typed up a lengthy answer and when I tried to post it I got an error message. So I just checked the board and it's gone! What the heck?!
Well, to the op and to the person who asked a follow up question in that post:
Here's the thing about yeast - you really have to be in disposables while you clear it up in your kid. You can keep them in cloth but then you'll need to add bleach to the wash EVERY time until the rash is completely gone for a few days on your child.
Yeast is a living thing so basically you have yeast on their bottom, then they wear a diaper and the yeast gets on the diaper. Then you wash the diaper but without bleach (or GSE which I'll mention below) the yeast STAYS in the diaper. So then you put the diaper back on the kid and wham - yeast is back on your child. It's a vicious cycle. So your best and safest bet is to put them in disposables until the rash is gone for a few days. Treat all of their diapers and wipes for yeast to kill it off in there and then when it's gone from both sources you can go back to using cloth. If you don't do this you'll be treating yeast forever.
To treat for yeast in the diapers you want to add a couple capfuls of bleach to the hot wash cycle and then rinse rinse rinse so there's not a lot of bleach hanging around in the diapers (some kids can be sensitive to this if you don't).
The other alternative is Grapefruit Seed Extract which is a natural antimicrobial and can also kill off the yeast in the wash. You'll need to add 50 (I believe this is the magic number) drops to the hot wash cycle.
Re: WTH just happened to the other yeast post?!
It wasn't your post. I think it was just titled Yeast Rash and I'm pretty sure it got deleted although I have no clue why!
As for your question - here's what I would do. I have used bleach on PUL with no problems so I wouldn't worry about that for a one time treatment. If you want to go the GSE route for ef purposes or health concerns then that would be fine too. I've heard that 50 drops is the magic GSE number for killing yeast. Now, your hot water issue isn't that big a deal. I would put a couple pots of water on the stove and get them boiling while you fill up your washer. Just dump them in as your warm cycle fills and now it's a hot cycle. This won't hurt your PUL like actually boiling them will. I do this All. The. Time. when I strip my diapers. I find that adding boiling water to my hot cycle does a far better job of getting build up out then any number of crazy additives.
I would probably throw the covers into the bleach wash for good measure but that's cause I wouldn't want to screw around with trying to figure out where the yeast was coming from just in case. I would also probably do the diapers that were in the pail with the yeasty diapers. That's what I'm about to do with mine because I think my son has a yeast rash and my daughters diapers have been washed with hers. I don't want to take the chance that she'll get one when it's just a matter of a slightly inconvenient wash cycle.
HTH and good luck getting rid of the yeast!
I think I was trying to reply to that post too and got an error message.
Could be operator error on my part, who knows, anyway...
We're having major yeast issues right now, I've bleached and sunned and nothing. The yeast comes back, I feel horrible for her. She's been in paper diapers for nearly a month now.
I'm starting to think that my washer totally sucks and doesn't get anything clean. Just curious, would you leave the dipes to soak in the bleach? Do you think that doing really small batches of diapers at a time in the wash would have any effect?
Thanks y'all
Are you sure it's yeast? If it is (and your treatment is working) then it should clear up while she's in disposables. Has her pedi looked at it and declared it yeast? Sometimes an otc anti fungal doesn't work for yeast and you might need to get a stronger perscription cream. If it's not clearing up while she's in the disposables and being treated with an otc cream than I'd guess that either you need a perscription or that it's not yeast at all. Someone mentioned in another thread that they thought they had yeast that wouldn't clear up and it turned out it was bacterial.
It's possible too that it's something in your diapers (not yeast related) that's causing the rash. Like detergent buildup causing a contact rash or ammonia issues etc.
I would not do a bleach soak personally. Bleach is really caustic and for a standard wash cycle once and awhile it's fine but if you soak the diapers in it, you're likely to break down the PUL in your diapers and covers and mess with the elastic too. Not to mention you'll fade your diapers like crazy although I'm sure that's not your main concern right now. Even if you're just using prefolds, soaking them for an extended period will break down the cotton fibers and you'll end up with ratty prefolds a lot faster than you would normally.
If you're definitely sure it's yeast and not something else causing the rash - you might want page Summerly ( . . . hmmm why do I feel like I haven't seen her in awhile) because I know she was battling yeast for awhile and might have some suggestions on how to get it out of the diapers really well.
Man, I just finally got to respond. Thanks so so so soooo much for the response. Yes, it's yeast, she has a prescription treatment and it clears up when she's in disposables or these new BG I bought just recently.
The whole situation is so irritating, ugh. Thanks for the advice about the bleach soak, I think I'm going to sun them for a couple days and rotate them around to be sure I get them all, and then run through the cycle again. I was thinking I should try to super clean out my washer or something, maybe there's build up in there too.
Detergent build up, yes, I need to strip them again, and again. I'm just gonna keep on keepin' on, thanks so very much!
