Here's a little background I posted on the regular DC board:
https://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/39424692.aspx
Anyway, just want to get ideas - anyone care to share some of their favorite boy names with me? I've got a long list of last-names-that-can-be-first-names that I'm looking at, but we're not married to the idea. We're wide open right now.
FWIW, our last name is three syllables.
Re: What boy names do you like?
Conrad.
Names that I liked but DH didn't or we couldn't use:
Elliot
Thomas
Adam
Arthur
Toby (I guess we would have gone with Tobias and called him Toby, but I'm not really a fan of Tobias)
Colin
Aaron
Seth
We haven't agreed on a single one yet. I can tell you some names we both didn't like... 1) the ones that can be (or sound like) either boys or girls, like Jamie, Taylor, Casey, Blake, Francis, Kennedy; 2) the ones that sounded like they would be characters on a soap opera like Brock, Pierce, Stone, Vaughn, Blake; and 3) location names like Dallas, Austin, Hudson.
you should play around on nymber.com
one of my fave baby name sites!
Alex
Gus
Jack
Kellan
Elliot
Finn
Jace
Nikolai
Henry
James
Adam
Ryan
ETA: Jordan is similar sounding to George
TTC #1 Cycle 14 - IUI#1=BFN, IUI#2=BFP | TTC #2 Cycle 8=BFP!!

DH and I could never agree on boys names (I guess it is very lucky we had a girl!)
He only liked Jake (not Jacob, just Jake)
I liked Colin, Evan, Ethan, Drew, Davis, Owen, Gavin, and Mason.
For your nest post, I think that I would give up on honoring either father just to not let the crappy father be honored if I felt that strongly about it.
As far as names I like, I really loved Nicholas, Daniel, Nathaniel (Nate). My sister just found she is having a boy and is naming him Nicholas (Yay, I finally get my Nicholas). My dad's mn is Daniel and that IS one of the reasons I liked it so much but not the only reason. Maggie is named after my mom Magdelon (her nn was Madge though, not Maggie) who passed away when I was 21 but both DH and I loved the name Maggie anyway. Molly's mn is Ann which was my mom's mn but that wasn't planned, we just didn't like any other mn's with Molly.
Boys names are tough. You should bookmark this blog, it is awesome:
https://swistlebabynames.blogspot.com/
Here are some names we considered: Henry, Charles/Charlie, Miles (I liked, DH didn't), Archie (DH liked, me not as much), Bo/Beau (disagreed over the spelling).
Some others that I like: Wyatt, Silas, Lincoln, Graham
I second looking at G names. What about Gabriel?
Or, could your maiden name shorten/inspire a first name? As in, Sprout's middle name will be a shortening of hubz's maternal grandfather's last name (we don't really like his first name)...it's actually a real first name where his family comes from. Like, for example, if your maiden name was Johnson you could name in John in honor of your father (aka the reason why you have that name).
Or, look into what George means & see if there are other names that also have that meaning.
Connor was my favorite - DH vetoed
I also liked Max & Ryan but then my 2 SIL's beat me to the punch (yes, 3 new babies i the family in 1 year - ours being last)
Jackson was the ONLY name we agreed on. I got lucky with the middle name Robert (it is DH name, and both of our Dad's middle names so it honors everyone in one fell swoop!!!).
Corbin, Josh, Brady, Dylan were also some names i liked.
Being a teacher made the name search HARD. I've had 7 years worth of kids and there were so many names I just could.not.handle. DH and I were beyond ridiculous about choosing a name. We both made a list of 10 that we liked and there was luckily one on there that was the same, so that became his name (Logan). At the time I had never taught a Logan. Now there are about 5 from kindergarten coming up to first grade...they better be good!
Anyway, FWIW, here are the other boy names I like:
Chase, Andrew, Tyler, Cameron, Colin, Charlie
DS's middle name is William, which I adore. I wanted that to be his first name for a long time. DH's dad's name was William, but he died when DH was 10 and he is much closer to his stepdad. He liked the idea of naming him after his dad but also didn't want his stepdad to feel hurt, so that's why it became his middle name.
James
Raymond
Oliver
Boys names are hard...we could never full settle on a boy's name with pregnancy...good thing we've had girls so far;)
the names (other than Warner) that made the top of our list were:
Caleb
Samuel
Rennan (my great-grandfather's name)
George, Frank, Henry, Oliver, Oscar, Linus, Harry
DS is Joshua Isaac but our close runner ups were Jacob, Ryan and Brent....we also have a 3 syllable last name
Isaac was a family name so any of the first names were going to go with it.
DH wants to name our next kid in honor of his paternal grandmother, who died a long time ago. All I've heard about her is what a biotch she was, though she was apparently nice to DH (he was the only one). I have no interest in naming #2 after someone who sounds so horrible.
I'm partial to Jacob because it's my maiden name. Like Sofka, we can't name babies after people who are still alive, and my mom says I'd be cursing the entire family by naming a boy Jacob. I was going to do it anyway, but my cousin ended up naming her son Jacob, so it's off the table.
ETA: I keep telling DH that we should not use his grandmother's name so that his sister (who is nowhere near to having kids) can use it. I keep hoping he'll buy it.
Our limited list was: Thomas, Jonathon, Logan, Edward, Aaron and of course Benjamin.
Limited because my husband had a very detailed list of what NOT to name including almost anyone other kids that he knew (family/friends), that didn't sound "girly" (his word not mine), that can be nicknamed, and was not associated with any guy I dated. LMAO, it was a short list.
Anyway, we agreed on Benjamin. I really wanted Heath as the middle name - I was "supposed" to be a boy and that was what my parents agreed as a middle name, so he had more pull on the first name.
Sorry about the naming negotiations
I had a somewhat similar situation. I kept telling DH that since our son would carry his family's last name his whole life (unlike DD, who might change hers), if any side of the family was going to be "honored" with a first/middle name, it should be mine...it seemed only fair. But because we had such trouble agreeing, it ended up that DS's first name is FIL's middle name - so everyone thinks we named him after him. Not true (it was also my grandfather's name, and anyway we both just liked it)...but it irks me a bit. So...I'm saying don't be swayed! Anyway, your "rules" are pretty much the ones I had in mind as well. Here are some that were on our list plus last-name-as-first-names that pop into my head...
Aaron
Adam
Anderson
Bennett
Becket
Connor
Carson
Caleb
Colin
David
Daniel
(An)Drew
Edward
Evan
Garrett
Holden
Harrison
Ian
Jacob
James (which actually is being used often as a girl's name now - ugh)
Joseph
Jonathan
Jaron / Jared
(Will)Liam
Lincoln (only because I had a dream in which I was told to name him that)
Luke
Nathaniel
Nicholas
Robert
Samuel
Seth
Thomas
DS is Trent anf if DD had been a boy, she would have been Garrett or Chase.
Other names we considered were:
Rhett
Dylan
Seth
Jackson
Gavin
Other names I like but couldn't use due to our last name, our dogs, or other people's kids:
Grayson
Brody
Tanner
Bryce
And I also like Stone!
My favorite boy's name after BabyCrown's is Alexander. But that seems to be everyone else's favorite name, too, so that got knocked off our list. I also like Theodore and Andrew. And Nicholas (and can't use any of these names because I've got cousins named that).
I think boys' names are so much more difficult than girls'.
And I'm really sorry that DH has made it so that you can't honor your father.
BabyCrown's name is DH's grandfather's first name, my dad's middle name (which is also an uncle's name, so we just used it as a family name).
Hey! That's a good point! I mean, his father's last name is being carried on for all eternity, why can't I throw my father's name in there too? I really like that logic. Must bring that point up... carefully.
I also like a lot of the names you listed - and a lot of the names everyone is listing - this is really helping ladies, thank you!!!
That made me lol. Actually, too of my favorite boys names (after C's, of course) are Graham and Grant.
I was able to see DH at lunch today, he was downtown for a meeting, and I mentioned several names. Henry seemed to strike his fancy, he said "I like it, I don't know why." We have a baby boy Henry on this board, don't we? I like that name too - is it making a comeback? Are there any bad associations to the name Henry - like is it the name of a serial killer I'm not thinking of...?
He shot down a bunch of names, I was kind of surprised at how many he doesn't like that I thought he would. I mean, I like names like Ezra and Maximillian - I knew he wouldn't like those - but he shot down a lot of common names too. Oh well, at least our list is getting shorter.
Henry is uber popular, if that matters to you.
But, I like it too (the hubz didn't. Perhaps b/c I swoon for Henry Tilney, a character in a Jane Austen book & the hubz is jealous?!?).
I didn't know that. Hmmm... It may matter - DH already doesn't want his first name because it's incredibly popular. Will have to share that with him.
ETA: Having LOTS of fun with nymbler.com and getting zero work done today.
if popularity is important, you may want to check out Name Voyager (or something like that). They have a great visual on the popularity of names throughout time.
Basically, names of our grandparents are really popular while names of our generation are not (like Jennifer. I know zero babies named Jennifer.). So, your best chance for a not-so-popular name might be a 70s-80s popular name. Or something kind of unusual.
I forgot about that Name Voyager thing - good idea! You know, with the girls, thinking of names was so much easier.
OK, Henry is ranked 71 in 2009, and you're right, it's been getting more popular. DH's name has been in the top ten and top five for years and years (sometimes number 3, number 1, number 2, then 3 again) - so an argument could be made that while Henry is gaining in popularity, DH's name really is "too" popular.
i recall the backstory and i'm sorry that your hubs thought that was a good idea (b/c that's just painful on many levels).
names that we really like (the first two are our boy names and they are all family names)
Marshall Alexander
Aaron Michael
Christian Michael
Cameron Maxwell
Andrew Phillip
Jackson Alexander
Asher
Elias
Zachary
Owen
I don't know why so many of mine are biblical names. Have you seen Nymbler? You type in names you like and it gives you suggestions for other names - it's like the Pandora of baby names.
ETA: OK, clearly you have already seen Nymbler :-) I do like the idea of finding a name that means the same as George.
