Natural Birth

introduction and question

Hi.  I come to you from a local board.  I am just in the beginning stages of trying.  I stumbled upon this board and wanted to check it out.  I may continue to lurk as we are not pregnant yet, but wanted to say hi.

I am interested in having a  VBAC.  I hope that I will be a candidate.  I am doing research and when I have my next visit to my obgyn I plan on mentioning to her about my decision.  We'll see how that goes.

I do have a question.  And I hope to have some honest answers--and not just a ton of flames.  I am just wondering what is your definition of natural birth?  Is it completely med-free or can a natural birth be considered one that is vaginal with meds?

Thanks.

Re: introduction and question

  • IMO natural is free of unneccessary medications and interventions. Fingers crossed I'll get to enjoy a natural birth.

  • I think it depends on who you ask. I was induced with cervidil and pictocin and was able to deliver my DS vag with out an epi. My birth was natural but I don?t think labor was because it did not start on its own.

  • welcome! there are lots of us here going for a vbac, and lots of ladies who have had a successful vbac! best of luck to you when your time comes. have you been to an ICAN meeting? very helpful in getting the resources you will need to talk to your doctor about vbac'ing.

to answer your question, we have discussed this a few times since this board was birthed a couple months ago. conclusion: everyone has a different definition!

my definition of natural birth: vaginal birth without pain medication.

i also intend to have a birth free of unnecessary interventions. to me, that is a bit beyond my definition of natural birth. personally i can't see why anyone would want to have unnecessary interventions (b/c, afterall, if they aren't necessary, why are you having them, especially since studies show one leads to another and before you know it, much more becomes "necessary"???).

  • This isn't usually a flaming board - haven't seen it yet on here since it started (we're relatively new).

I agree with a PP - it depends on who you ask, but usually I think most people on here would say "without unnecessary intervention and medication."  That being said it's awesome that the other PP had to be induced (necessary) but was able to deliver w/o the epi (no necessary in her case).

Keep up the research!!!  There are others on here who have had or plan on having successful VBACs!

The definition can vary person to person and it can be a very personal definition as well.

I'd say the general concensus is "med-free and intervention-free" as most people have stated.  That is how I define it as well.  Though, even if I end up having a "low-intervention" experience but still go without pain meds, I would still consider myself to have had a natural birth.  Sometimes interventions are necessary.

Good luck with your VBAC and I hope you find awesome support that will make it successful!

  • I think natural means no unnecessary interventions.  But for me this means no hospitals.  However, I would never tell someone who was induced for good reason but still had a pain med free hospital birth that her birth wasn't natural.

Good luck with the VBAC!  I have a friend who had a home VBAC very successfully.
