Does nutritional yeast spoil?

We're out of parmesan cheese and I remembered I had some nutritional yeast in the cupboard, and eons ago when I was vegan I used n.y. in place of parm.  The stuff in the cupboard is newer, but could be 4-5 years old.  Tastes basically right, I can't decide if the slightly off taste means it's off or I'm not used to eating it anymore.

Does anyone know if it spoils, or more specifically, its shelf life?

  • Haha- I hope someone answers this! I was just wondering about this today!

  • It doesn't spoil per se, but the makeup, and in turn the nutrients, diminish after two years in a cool, dark place.  Light, heat, etc. speeds up the process. HTH

  • Thanks! I ended up dumping it because I finally found online essentially what you said, and I knew it was at least 4 years old (cool dark place tho) and it was only maybe a third of a cup.
