Hand Knit Baby Clothes

Steve's aunt hand knit a bunch of baby clothes for us - they are beautiful!  However - to be honest - I am scared to use them.  Don't most babies spit up a lot?  How do I clean them?  If you received similar things - did you do much beyond dressing them in them for pics to show the giver?

I love them and I am so honored she took all that time for our baby - I just hate to see them get ruined...

Re: Hand Knit Baby Clothes

  • My best friend's mom made DS a blanket.  I never used it.  I was afraid to ruin it!

  • My sister is an avid knitter and has made amazing things for my daughters.  She used machine washable yarn since she knew it was for a baby.  I was able to use some of the items numerous times, especially as your LO gets older and they spit up less.  Since there were several things made for each of my 2 daughters, I was sure to keep at least one thing in perfect condition.  She made it clear that she knit them to be worn, not bronzed.  It was a hard directive to carry out, but I knew it was important for her to have her items worn, not just stared at.
  • The yarn packages usually have washing directions on it.

I'd just ask her what kind of yarn she used!

If I made something for someone, I'd definitely rather they wear it, than letting it sit around!

  • I washed them on cold and dried them on low. I knit and crochet, I hope that people use my gifts and aren't afraid to wash them! I put my daughter in two hand made sweaters all the time with no problems. I'd rather things get worn out than be hung in a closet forever.

  • I don't think my son spit up too much and if he did it was right after I nursed him. Not sure if you're planning on BFing or using formula, but I never had a single stain from breastmilk.  As for how to wash, I would probably hand wash the items in cold water and use Woolite or something similar.
  • i crocheted a baby blanket for my nephew and washed it before gifting and i know my sister has washed it numerous times as well. i plan on crocheting some clothes for my own LO when i find out the sex and wouldn't hesitate to wash those.

i washed in the machine on a gentle cycle, in a mesh bag. i would think knit clothes would be fine to do the same. i agree with pp, i would hope my gifts would be used and not just hung in a closet somewhere!

  • Thanks for the advice all:)  I think I will try the mesh bag on the gentle cycle.
