I hate being "that mom" but DD is still not walking at 15 months

So, DD is now 15 months old.  She was a slow crawler, didn't start until 11 months.  She has been walking around furniture and pulling herself up onto things for about 2-3 months.  Everyone says "oh, she'll be walking very soon" but I am still waiting.  I hate to be "that mom" who compares her child to all the others, but this is a big concern of mine.  Any other mom's who's kids were slow walkers?  We have her 15 month appt next Monday so we will see what her ped has to say.

Thanks ladies!

  • It's recommended that kids crawl for at least 4 or 5 months before walking.  In fact, early walkers (kids who crawl only for a short time before walking) are actually at a greater risk for learning disabilities and ADHD later on.  Of course, not all early walkers will have problems, but the research has shown that the risk is increased.  So, that being said, I would be very happy that your LO is not walking yet!  She's right on track!

  • C was very cautious about walking.  One day she just will.  I don't think he really started walking in public until 14 months, even though he started cruising much earlier.

  • C didn't start walking well until 20 months.  You wouldn't even know it now.

I would add that I suspect that crawling is where hand/eye coordination come from.  I went straight to walking and have none ;o)  My depth perception is all kinds of wacky too.

  • Luvlie is right late crawling is correlated with better coordination and in addition to what PP listed also lower risk for autism.

    So there are advantages!

I think your pedi will tell you that she's definitely not behind. I was just reading someone's blog the other day where their 3rd child was just pulling up at that age and certainly not walking.  It's hard not to compare but definitely try not to worry.

  • My DS is still not walking unassisted at 17 mos. He didn't crawl until 14 mos, although he did have a sitting kind of roll thing that got him places. Just zero interest in it.

Everyone gets there eventually, at their own pace. :)

  • My DS walked at 15 months - very soon after running all over the place.

I wouldn't worry - it will happen soon and you'll be getting more exercise than ever!

  • DD crawled for the first time 2 weeks before her 1st birthday.

    She walked at 15.5mo.

Prior to crawling, she was an immobile lump. Seriously, she did not move by scooting, rolling, army crawl, nothing. Leave her in the middle of a room, come back 10 minutes later, she'd still be in the same spot.

She was a little timid when it came to learning to climb and run, so that took a little while to catch up on, but now she is all caught up.

  • DS has been crawling since 10-11mo, and still not walking.  He's 16mo old now.  He cruises and walks if we hold his hands.  Is she cautious in general?  DS is, and I think he's just waiting until he's sure he won't fall.

  • DD didnt' take her first steps until 15 months, I was never worried.  Enjoy the time while she isn't walking/running and it's easier to keep up with her.  15 months is well within the normal range of development.
  • Emerson didn't walk until 16 months.  She is now a pro at it and is almost running.

She was slow to roll over, slow to sit up, slow to crawl (like super slow, near one year), slow to stand.  But the pedi says she is developing well and once she does achieve some milestone she masters it quite quickly.

Oh, and supposedly I didn't start walking until just after 18 months. Guess it runs in the family! Smile
