Missed the memo on going every two weeks...

I had my 28 week appointment this afternoon and was completely shocked when she said to come back in 2 weeks.  I thought for sure I had another month before I had to go every two weeks.  Ooooooops.

In good news, though, weebit's kidney is still dilated, but well within the range of just being a concern and not a problem now. They'll check again around 36 weeks to see whether we'll need to see a pediatric urologist, but so far, things are good...

Re: Missed the memo on going every two weeks...

  • The same thing happened to me--at 28 weeks they told me to come back at 30 weeks and I was totally surprised too.  When I went at 30 weeks it was a 5-minute nothing appointment.  Now at 32 weeks I have to go 2x weekly (once to OB and once to mat-fet specialist) b/c I'm over 40.

We also have the kidney dilation issue and it seems to be improving--one kidney is totally normal now and the other got only a tiny bit bigger from 10-11, but the normal range now goes up to 8 and it was only up to 6 last time.

  • Ha, okay, glad I'm not the only one....I asked if I HAD to go to M-F for the ultrasounds since I'm not over 40 and the ONLY issue is the kidney dilation; my doc agreed to just do renal u/s in their office to check that since there wasn't anything else that necessitated me seeing someone else and spending the time on that [weebit's kidney is between 4 and 5 - 4 was the cutoff the last time, but it's now 6, so she's not really concerned except that it hasn't gone away].  I can't remember - are you having a boy, or do you know? They keep telling me it's really common in boys!

  • I was told it's much more common with boys too because they have more tubing so more of a chance for something to get kinked or blocked.  However, we're having a girl.  DH was born with a kidney blockage and since there were no u/s's back then his kidney ended up being nonfunctional and later had to be removed at age 5 when he fell and it filled with fluid making him sick.  Apparently, some blockages are genetic so she may need to have hers stented after she's born unless it resolves on its own.  We just feel lucky that it was caught so early that if the blockage remains the kidney can be saved.

Okay, so NOW I see the badge in your siggy that says Girl.  Blonde moment? ;)

I'll be sending lots of dust your way that it resolves on it's own and that she doesn't have major complications or anything like that.  YAY for modern technology to catch these things!

  • Thank you and let's hope both of our babies are born with undialated, unblocked kidneys!
