Hi Ladies, we are going to Oahu Hawaii in a few weeks do you have a tips for us...flying, things to do, things to bring/not to bring. Greatly appreciated. thanks.
We went to Waikiki with DD when she was 10 months old, and had a blast! We were only there for 4 days, and she is much younger than your LO, but I think I have some tips for you
-On takeoff and landing, make sure you give your LO something to drink/ sip on so that their ears don't bother them.
-we fly with DD pretty often, and this is what we usually do- DH boards tha plane during pre-boarding. He takes the stroller and gate-checks it and takes the carry on bag and puts it up. He then wipes down the seats/ tray tables/ windows/ armrests/ etc with wet ones. I stay at the gate and let DD walk around, explore, and look at things until the very last minute. For me, it totally beats having to entertain DD for an extra 45 minutes while everyone else boards!
-for toys, take lots of new ones that are small! I pack a backpack with toys and books. I take a few favorites from home, and pack some new ones also. I also take away some of her toys about a week or two before the flight and pack them up so that they're "new" when I take them out on the plane.
-SNACKS! Take lots of them
-Luckily, the flight is fairly short (5 or 6 hrs, if I remember correctly). I'm sure you'll do great!
-I'm not sure if you'll be in Waikiki, but Waikiki is a great place with a LO because there are so many family-friendly restaurants. Also, we used to walk up and down the main strip in the afternoons/ early evenings, and then go get shaved ice. It was a blast and something we looked forward to every day! We went up to the North Shore one day, but we honestly didn't enjoy it that much bc DD wasn't that into going in the ocean. If your LO loves the beach, then it may be worth it! Have fun!
honolulu zoo is fun and there is also an aquarium there. roy's restaurant has yummy food AND most importantly, they are SUPER kid friendly! when we went, we just had ryan at the time and they would bring him kid friendly snacks and instead of ordering him something from the kid menu since he was so small, they just brought out something he could eat (i don't remember exactly, but i do remember mashed potatoes) and a sorbet. he also got a mini beenie baby...all for no extra charge.
We went there about 3 years ago, and I was not impressed with Waikiki. It really looks like Long Beach...but we went to the North Shore, and that area was beautiful! The dole pineapple plantation was fun too. I'm awful at spelling these names, check out Waimea Falls and Bay, there was a really cool waterfall you could hike to. We stayed at the Turtle Bay resort there. You'll want to check out Pearl Harbor too...and on the other side of diamond head from waikiki is Hanauma Bay, and that was a really good snorkel spot...we were lucky to swim with sea turtles! I'd take a few snacks with you, and shop at the supermarket to save money. Ask for their store's club card (like a vons club, etc) to save some money. Have a wonderful time!!!! I hope you're renting a car...there's so much to see and do.
Re: Travel Tips Oahu, HI??
We took Max to Spain, and Montana, and are headed to Cape Cod in a few weeks -- this site has a good list of plane toys!
