have you done road trips with two when one was about 2-3 months old? With DH's job, when he is home he needs to take some classes at times, and they are 10 hrs away in FL. His company pays for food, hotel and they pay him to go...so we can go too. Its either we go with, or we miss another week without him...after 3 wks away we dont like to do that. We used to fly with just DS, but I am not sure I want to do that with 2. With driving, we would stop over in orlando for a night or so and make a trip out of it. My ?'s:
would you drive or fly? (is company only pays for his ticket)
and how does staying in a hotel with two kids work?
the set up in this hotel which we've stayed in before is nice...has a separate sitting area (and a semi partition wall) so we could watch tv and not wake DS when we've gone before...BUT with two kids, im afraid it will be nuts and one will wake the other...
any tips? experiences? TIA
Re: traveling with 2
I haven't done a 10 hour road trip, but I did go to a wedding 5 hours away, and I stayed in a hotel with my two. The youngest was about 6 months old at the time. There was just one room. The hotel provided one crib, and I brought my PNP. When it was time to go to bed I gave both boys baths and then put the baby in the crib and let DS sit in the bed with me and eat snacks and watch TV until he fell asleep. Then I put him in the PNP, watched a little more TV and went to sleep myself.
In the morning my sister came by (she and her BF were in a room across the hall), and we took the boys down to breakfast and swimming in the hotel pool.
I did bring the single stroller. I had help getting everything inside, but it was easier to keep my 2 y/o strapped in while I checked in, got the PNP and suitcase into the elevator, etc.
The stroller was also key for public bathroom diaper changes.
I don't have any experience flying. Good luck!
We LOVE roadtrips. We took one when DD#1 was 21 months and DS was 6 weeks and had no problems with 24 hr drive each way (not all at once - several hotel stops). We also flew with them when DD#1 was about 22 months and DS was around 10 weeks and had no problems.
When DD#2 was about 5 weeks, we went from WA to AZ and stayed in a hotel like you described. We brought a fan along to muffle noise for all involved. We pretty much went to bed at the same time (we were EXHAUSTED) and had another 12 hr drive ahead of us.
We are heading out on Tuesday for another 12 hr road trip for vacation and will stay in a hotel again. We plan to bring the fan as we will be in one room - no partition this time.
Good luck!
I don't have experience with two yet, but I would definitely drive. You'll want to bring so much gear to make the trip more comfortable and enjoyable, and that would be hard with flying. Plus you'll have to worry about checking carseats and what not.
Do you have two PNPs? I bet the hotel will provide at least one bed.
That's awesome that you'll have a separate living area. We just did an overnight trip with dd and stayed in a suite and it made it way more enjoyable for us to be able to hang out and watch tv without worrying about waking dd. Plus, it gave her more room to crawl around.
Good luck! It's going to be so fun!
Eh - for us...our trips are good in the very beginning when they sleep most of the time. But once you get into 3 months it's a little rough. Personally I'd skip that one and wait until #2 is more content to sit on her own and play/look at books etc. for that long...depends on the kid, I guess. I know a lot of people that just drive through the night so the LOs sleep for most of it. I haven't done this, though.
We're doing a 6 hour car ride next week - so I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for that right now.
im hoping it'll be okay, if we dont go we wont see DH for a month....so its kinda somthing we have to do. Especially for DS, he is starting to miss him more and more each time. Hopefully it wont be hell.....
GL on your trip!
We've done lots of trips both flying and driving. The good thing about driving is that you can bring all the stuff you want (or can fit), which does help settling the little ones into a hotel. We did a trip when LO was 3 months and DD1 was 2, most of which was driving, probably at least 5 hours a day, and they did great! We just stopped for activities when they needed a break or a feed. Find out from the hotel if they provide port a cribs, or otherwise bring a PNP or two. (You might want to consider bringing it anyway, if you have the room and the patience to set it up, since it'll help smell like home.) Also, the room setup will be a great advantage for you guys, but also maybe bring some portable noise, like a white noise machine, fan, lullabies, etc. I normally use my iPhone.
For me, it all hinges on how well the LOs sleep, so bring whatever you can to help that along, and I'm sure you'll have a great trip!
We did 12 hours with three! We broke it up into two days there and back. For the most part, the kids all did great! The kids were roudy for the hotel after being in the car so long but luckily we got there around 5pm on they way back and after bedtime (which worked better) on the way there.
When I had two, I flew a lot more often and found it pretty easy except going through TSA! It was only a 2.5 hour flight though! We watched lots of movies on the airplane and I brought lots of snacks. I flew by myself with them (but drove with help)
I am not so sure about three on the airplane!
I would drive vs fly just to save money. Plane tickets are expensive.
I haven't stayed in a hotel with 2 kids but did just get back from a trip (3 ten hour drives with a day in CO in between) and we all stayed in the same room. Pretty much sucked. It was hell trying to keep one quiet when he went to bed so he wouldn't wake up the baby and when the baby woke up (4:30am) he woke up the toddler. If I was doing the hotel I would either put 1 in the bathroom (if there was room for a PNP) and 1 in the main room or I would just get 2 separate rooms if DH was going to be with and we would each have a kid. My kids are 2yr and basically 9mos old. The 2mos old may sleep better so you may not have the issues I did.
