Third-Hand Smoke...Is there a way to be nice?!?!

I know I have mentioned before how I absolutely HATE smoking.  This weekend we have a wedding in DH's fam, and I'm already anticipating the barrage of people who have been smoking that will ask to hold her (I already know my SIL & a few Aunts will ask & are also smokers).  Some people might say I'm too anal about this (ie- DH) but it really bugs me that people don't take the baby's health into consideration.

How I ask nicely if they have been smoking when they ask to hold her?

  • I blame the pedi, "the doc recs that if you hold the baby after smoking to change your shirt.  Or put on a jacket when you go outside to smoke."  It is better than nothing.

Or you could wear her the entire weekend.

  • I agree with the wearing her idea.  Also take a blanket or burp cloth with you and make them use it.  At least there would be a barrier between her and their stinky clothes.  You could say they need to use it because of spit up.

Im with you - Im really anal about smoking around me.  I can only imagine how I will handle it with my baby.  Luckily most of our friends and family dont smoke.

I think if you just politely decline or just ask them to wash their hands etc. before holding her would be fine. Think Nicole brought this up before but I seriously wouldn't be offended if someone asked this of me. Think it's a pretty nomal/common thing to ask of. GL
