December 2010 Moms

Are you getting a baby carrier?

We are planning on getting a front/back carrier. What brand are you planning on buying/registering for?

I'm looking into Ergo, Baby Bjorn, and Beca.

  • I'm getting an Ergo.  It's the one brand I consistently hear/read great things about.

  • Yep, I'm looking into them and definately getting one...It's a toss up between the Ergo and Baby Bjorn right now. I'm leaning a little more toward Baby Bjorn, but haven't researched enough to say for sure.

We have an Ergo and LOVE it!

I would NEVER put my baby in an Bjorn. Our Pedi told us that it can cause major hip and pelvis issues, because hanging them from their crotch is awful for them and those areas and their development..just FYI.

This is interesting info! Thanks, girl. I've heard many good things about the Ergo. Baby Bargains gives them a huge thumbs up. I'm going to try some on when we work on our registry this weekend and see what feels good, too. :))

Babysteals.com has them for $70 every so often. Get the infant insert, it is awesome..or Moby's are great when they are super little. We love that one as well.

Thanks! Yeah, they had the Ergo on there a couple weeks ago, and I contemplated it, but by the time I went back they were out of stock of the one I wanted. I will keep checking back! :))

This. The reason that I am leaning towards Baby Bjorn is for the outward facing position. Baby bargains and a few friends have pointed out that the baby can only face you with the Ergo. If we do go with Baby Bjorn it will be the active, for the extra back support.

This is one of the items i'm still trying to think about. Im debating on if its something we will really use or not. If so we will probably go with one of the ones listed above

  • But when the baby gets older, you can wear them on your back with the Ergo which will be facing the same direction as the parent.

  • If I were to get one I would go with an Ergo or Moby. I am all for the baby wearing.

However, I really don't think we will need one. The winters here are harsh and it snows anywhere from October clear into April where we are at. So we really don't go anywhere during this time. So I feel like for us it probably won't be a necessity.

Instead I am opting to buy this because I feel like we would get a little bit more use out of it and it is ridiculously cute.

A nod for the Beco - can't wait to get mine and use it with the baby!  This website (The Portable Baby) has a nice little comparison chart that might help - https://www.theportablebaby.com/carrierfeatures.html.

I love it! That is ridiculously cute!

  • I have a hotsling (doo doo) and a babyhawk (wayyy awesome!). I think I'm going to do the make your own moby wrap with some stretchy fabric b/c I'm cheap like that. Although I heard you can use the babyhawk with newborns too.

We're going with Ergo for this exact reason.  It seems crazy that they even still sell Bjorns to me.  We are also getting a Moby wrap as well.

  • Also, a lot of mom's I have talked to use the Moby in the house a LOT to get stuff done while holding the baby.
  • We have one, and it was a PITA to get DS in it. I want a sling this time so I can nurse on the go better!!

Ours is a snugli I think...

  • With DS I made a baby sling, this time around I want to try the baby wraps. The front carriers didn't work for us at all, I got the hip one and Dh bought the front carrier and it was so uncomfortable for us to use. Even though our winters are freezing, we will be making trips to the Y to walk to track and the ladies there have said that the wraps are better for the baby and me walking. So I figured it couldn't hurt to give them a try, of course since I am cheap I will make my own:)
  • I bought an Ergo last week at 50% off on babysteals.com, I'm excited for it to get here! I've got several friends who have Ergo's and they all rave about it. With DD, I had a Snuggli and it was fine but honestly, after 20-30 minutes my  back started to hurt (and she was NOT a heavy baby).

I had a Bjorn and never used it with DD. I felt like it was huge, like I had a suitcase on. I want to find something for #2 because I'd like to have hands-free for DD when we're out.

Good to know! Looks like it's time for me to do some research :)

  • We'll probably get the beco for me and the baby hawk oh snap for DH. We played with one of the ergos at the store and dh wasn't sold on it.  I've been lurking on the AP board for awhile to hear all their rec's for baby wearing and although the slings and wraps are cute, I just don't know how comfortable I feel wrapping fabric around (big fan of buckles), plus in AZ gets super hot in the summer.  FYI the pikkolo does a forward facing carry without crotch dangling if the pp was interested in that.

We're thinking about  Moby. I had a bjorn last time and was reluctant to use it much because of the hip issue Lucky mentioned. I'd have loved an Ergo, but, esp with the infant insert, they're a bit pricey for me.

  • I got a Baby Bjorn, I heard great things about it from other moms.

  • We're inheriting a baby bjorn from my SIL.  From what I've read, they're ok when the baby is tiny, it is when they get older/heavier (15 lbs., not really so heavy) that the issues arise.  So we'll try that out for a short while before investing in anything else (since it's free we'll try it out, but I wouldn't buy a BB).  I do want to try to make a DIY Moby or similar wrap, there are lots of instructions on the internet for them.

  • I have asked every mom I know that has a baby or a few children. They all swear by Baby Bjorn. So that is what I registered for.
  • Is anyone getting a mei tai? I haven't made my mind up yet, by any means, but I'm wondering if the ties would be good for us, since DH and I will probably share one.

I don't want the Bjorn for the reasons pp mentioned, and I don't like ones that wrap all around your body, because they seem like they'd be very hot and sweaty for Florida. Otherwise, I'm still kind of up in the air.

I probably need to see if BRU or someone has floor models we can try on to get a better sense of what they're like.

  • Yes, I'm registering for an Ergo.  I read that they are better for baby's spine than other carriers and that they distribute baby's weight evenly between the wearer's shoulders and hips.  The one downside (to me) is that baby can only face inward and cannot face outward.

  • I live in NYC and walking is my primary mode of transporation, so I can't imagine not getting one. I'm not sure which one though.

I'm getting a mei tai off of etsy.com.  I have the baby bjorn and an ergo.  Baby bjorn doesn't work for me because my kids are too chubby.  And the ergo is great but it's for older babies.  So I am ordering a mei tai.  They're very versatile and you can get them in a large range of styles on etsy.com.  And they're not too badly priced!

  • Yes, I want a Mei Tai, and I'm leaning towards a Baby Hawk.

I've never heard a bad thing about the Ergo.  Personally, I don't like the way they look, but people RAVE about them.  I don't think you can go wrong with one.

Ergo, Beco, and Mei Tei all more versatile than Bjorn because you can wear the baby on your back, too.

I love my Moby, but if it's warm out, you will be HOT.  I've tried to wear DS on my back with it and he was never secure.  I can't even find instructions for back wearing with the Moby on their site....I wonder if they took them off because there are too many accidents?

I tried the Beco in a store last night, and didn't like that you had to put your child's legs through that insert.  Seemed like a lot of work to me, when compared with others where you don't have to put their legs through anything.

  • I got a snugli when I had my daughter and I found it much more comfortable to wear than the Baby Bjorn was.  But she was a chunker!
