Outlander girls

If you read the Outlander series, have you read the Lord John books also?  I'm trying to decide if they are worth buying.

You know, I never found Lord John as fascinating as the writer obviously has, so I've never bought or read them.  I'd be interested to see what others think.

    This.

My love affair is with Jamie.

No interest in the Lord John books.

I will however admit to re-reading the whole series AND listening to the first 2 books on audio books.

    Love me some Outlander!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • I love Jamie and Claire too and it just wouldnt be the same without them which is giving me pause.  On the other hand, I can't get enough and am stalking Diana Gabaldon's website for a her to post an exerpt from book 8.

I cant re-read books but I am going to give it a try with these, otherwise I might not survive!  I know this sounds terrible pathetic but my life is so boring now that I have finished these books.  They consumed me for the last 2 months.

I'm almost done re-reading the whole series this summer, and I have to say, there is SO MUCH I missed when I whipped through the first time.

Even Lord John's love is Jamie...  We're not alone!

The big joke amongst my friends is that we're all terrified that she'll get hit by a bus and die before she concludes the saga.

     Sick, huh?

    A few suggestions:

    1.  Try checking the audio books out from the library.  I wasn't a huge audio book fan but they're done REALLY well.  The woman who reads them is exceptional and it's fun to hear her do all the different accents.

It's also handy for things like cooking dinner, driving, etc when you can't just sit and read but would like some entertainment.

    2.  Have you read The Hunger Games series?  Just finished that on audio book (38 hours alone in the car with the kids on vacation) and LOOOVED it.

FWIW - I 100% get your Outlander withdrawl.

    You're not alone.

And it sounds like you may be joining the "PLEASE don't get hit by a bus and die, Diana Gabaldon" club!

Audio books are a GREAT idea!  I always try to imagine everyone's accent and I know I dont do it justice.

Where do I sign up for that club?  Should we create a facebook page?

Is it just me though?  The last book fell flat.  I feel like it dragged and dragged and dragged for a while, and then a bunch of plot lines opened and were left hanging.  Maybe it was because it took so long after Breath of Snow and Ashes.  (Hope I didn't spoil anything there...)

  • I've read the Lord John books -- they are good.  And FWIW you "meet" characters that reappear in Echo in the Bone.  And LJ does talk about Jaime -- not the same of course but still interesting.  They are more "spooky" and mystery like too so the genre is different which I think makes them easier to separate from Jaime and Claire.

  • I'm glad you posted this. I just saw the books yesterday and was wondering if I should read those too. I think I'll hold off for a while.

  • I have just finished them and I like them, but don't love them. The only one I really enjoyed was Brotherhood of the Blade, but there are 6 different stories. They all take place before he goes to America, so I would rather read some that take place when he is in VA.

Lord John and the Hellfire Club (short story)
Lord John and the Private Matter (novel)
Lord John and the Succubus (novella)
Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade (novel)
Lord John and the Haunted Soldier (novella)
The Custom of the Country (novella printed in Warriors)

I totally hear what you're saying.  I felt like I should have just turned the page rather than having to wait for another book with everything that was left open.  I dont think the other books were like that.  Actually I know that there were some books where I felt like it would have been the perfect place to end the series (except that I would have been sad to not have Jamie anymore!).  Book 7 was a total cliff hanger on purpose, she wrote about it on her website.

Also, I've found that when I read a whole series in a row (which I've done a lot of recently) and then have the wait for the next book, it is always a disappointment.  I think you become so involved with the characters initially that the break pulls you away a little and you are less invested.  I've felt this way with the Sookie Stackhouse books and Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake books (which has just turned into porn with no story line).

I hope that doesnt happen with book 8!!

And while we're talking Outlander (SPOILER).... what is the deal with the fire?  At first there was a little blurb about there being a mistake at the printer because they were lazy, then Roger says that the date changed on the original document, so which is it?  I think that makes a HUGE difference in the premise of the book - Is it possible to change the past?  That's what this is all about, right?

Thanks!  So maybe I will check them out if I cant survive until the next book comes out.

the printer didn't think it was a big deal to change the date in the paper to save space, he didn't think it mattered when it happened, as long as it got reported. You can try and change the past all you want, but it is with your actions that you are already changing the past, but the major events are still going to happen.

That's what I thought too but then they said that Roger went to Oxford to check the original and the date was different.  She never went into specifics, I'm assuming that will come in the next book, but it certainly led me to believe that the document changed.
