Poll: Boy Names

Here is my dilemma.  I really like the name Nicholas; however, I am not so much a fan of the nickname Nick.  I just don't know that I will be able to stop people from shortening the name... especially when he starts school.  Your thoughts are appreciated!

  • How about the nn Cole? I knew a Nicholas that went by Cole and that worked for him...

I know a few people who are named Nicholas and have always just been Nicholas, never Nick. I say if you like it the best go for it and just call him Nicholas. I find that people usually follow the parent's lead when it comes to nicknames and call the child whatever the parent calls them.

Thanks.  I did consider this as a possible nickname... I like it a lot more than Nick!! Sometimes I just wish there was no such thing as nicknames.  LOL.

  • I prefer Nicholas to Evan (it's too close to your DS #1s name). I would do like pp said and just tell people you want him to go by Nicholas and only Nicholas. Then when he gets to school he can say the same.

  • I have a Nicolas and everyone uses his full name.    I realize he's still a little guy but so far I have not had issues with it.   When he was a newborn a couple people asked me what he'll go by, Nicolas or Nick,  and they have respected my request to use his full name.

Go for the name that you really like.

  • I'm pretty sure there's a bourbon called Evan Williams, so I think I would go with Nicholas.

This Evan Williams is a whiskey so go with Nicholas and keep firm about not letting anyone call him Nick and if someone does just simply say "Nicholas" people will eventually get it!

  • Tell them his name is Nicolas. You can make ppl call him that until he's 18. Then, if he wants to shorten it to Nick, there's nothing you can do about it.

  • I love the name Nicholas! It is my brother's name or it would have been on our list.

Evan is nice too, and the only reason that one didn't make our list is because DH is Kevin, and I thought they were way too similar.

I would choose Nicholas over Evan though.

I'm a teacher and I call kids what they want. Usually a form goes out before school, on one of the questions we ask parents what the child's name is and what you want them to go by. If they say Nicholas that's what I would say and the kids would say too. GL!

  • I like Evan the best.

  • Just a quick aside: my name is Catherine, and my mom was determined that it would not be shortened. I'm now an adult and have never gone by anything but Catherine.

Leading to: If you're really into Nicholas, name him Nicholas and push Nicholas onto the relatives.  If he likes Nick, though, there's not much you can do about that.

  • The only reason I went for Nicholas William is because Evan William(s) is a whiskey.  I do like both first names though.
