Hi ladies...THANK YOU for all your thoughts and prayers. And a special thanks to Allison & Sally for posting after reading my FB status. I'm going to post & run because I am supposed to be drinking, resting, and staying on my side whenever I'm resting. Sitting in the computer chair probably doesn't count, so I'll make this as quick as possible.
Baby had been breech, but because I was curious, I had our radiologist scan quick at lunch time. It wasn't a very clear picture, but it sure didn't look like baby's head up top (that was great news to me). I had a patient to take care of this afternoon that needed general anesthesia. Did that, but couldn't get comfy on the stool. I thought for sure it was just the same pelvic pain I've been having since 25 weeks (ligaments loosening/stretching in my pelvis). It really didn't feel any different.
I brought our Lab home from boarding (he was there while we went to the baby shower in Ohio), and went to the bathroom. I felt a weird pelvic pressure, but wasn't sure if it was anything. Apparently, it was baby's head getting comfy down in my pelvis. I called the midwife, who asked me about what I had done today and how much water I had drank. She wanted me to come into the hospital to be monitored.
I haven't (until today) figured out what a contraction feels like. I don't think I've been having "BH" contractions, even though my mom swore I was when she came to visit at Memorial Day. I checked into L&D and after being on the monitor about 20 minutes, I had about 9 contractions. Ack! I was scared, a little, so I called my husband. I let him stay at home until the initial monitoring was over as I didn't think it would be anything at all.
I was told to drink, drink, drink, and that they would start an IV. IV bolus of 500 mL of fluids, and the contractions were not slowing down. While the fluids were running, I got an ultrasound (proving that indeed baby was down instead of breech) and that my cervix was still closed and nearly long (2.9 cm -- midwife likes to see it at 3.0). The internal felt like a TON of pressure; I closed my eyes through it, and started seeing spots, which was weird. But it was quick, and indeed no dilation. The midwife did a swab for fetal fibronectin and GBS. After all the internal stuff, the u/s tech came back and did a u/s of cervix. I could see baby's head right at the border of my cervix...which was kind of weird, but cool, too.
I stayed on fluids, and the contractions were still not slowing, so I got an injection of terbutaline to slow the contractions. By the time I left, they were every 8-10 minutes. I've felt one since I got home, but so far, they haven't been ones that I can't talk through or bear. So, with no cervical changes, and and negative FFN, I was discharged. I'm supposed to come back to midwife's office on Thursday for a BP check and another internal +/- more monitoring in the office.
Baby girl is GROUNDED. I'm staying home from work from now until Monday (taking tomorrow off as a sick day, and already planned on having Thursday-Sunday off). Our trip to Pittsburgh has been essentially cancelled. DH may still go to the game on Sat., but I have a "babysitter" (one of my good friends) to hang with while he goes. Even though midwife said it might not be a problem, we'd rather be safe than sorry and close to the hospital in case we need it. When I do go back to work, I'll be on a modified schedule, which is as of yet to be determined.
I'm really tired...whether excited or scared, there was a lot of adrenaline, and now that's kind of fading. I'm so glad that baby girl is not imminently coming out, and just ready to rest & relax. Thanks again for all of your thoughts and prayers. It is SO appreciated!!
Re: Update (from home, not L&D)
So glad to hear you're home safe! I was wondering about the BH contractions when you asked about it the other day, it didn't sound like we were having the same kind of feelings.
Be super gentle on yourself the next few days, ok sweetie? Keep us informed about how you're feeling!
