Tell me..why are cupcakes so expensive?! (little vent)

I really want to buy cupcakes for DD's birthday. Altho, baking them would probably be easier...but, I am not a baker and I know they are easy peasy. I have looked at so many bakeries througout OC and not one (so far) has had a price under $32 a dozen. That would mean I would have to spend nearly $100+ on cupcakes, really? The cheapest I have found is Sweet Embelishments in LB. Good cupcakes, but they only sell their flavors, no customizing. I'm really not asking for much, simple white cupcakes with pink and green frosting, maybe some polka dots. I know if I did them, the frosting would look horrible and not smooth.

Does anyone know of a good place that won't break the bank? I'm looking to have roughly 60 cupcakes.  TIA!

Have you looked at French's cupcake bakery in Costa Mesa? Check out their website. They have regular cupcakes with colored frosting starting at $1.50 each and gourmet cupcakes starting at $2 each.

    Good luck!

  • I got my boys' cupcake cake at Ralph's and was surprised how tasty the cupcakes were and the design was awesome.  I also heard Albertson's and Pavillions make yummy ones too.  For a 24 cupcake cake and 6 extra cupcakes on the side, it was $22.  I'm sure you can get custom individual cupcakes too.

Here's a pic of the cake they made - only complaint is that they left off one of my boy's name!  Then added it in pink... nice, huh?

  • I went to Costco. Ridiculously cheap. Nothing fancy though.
  • Ditto on Costco... but they're gigantic!

Sam's Club has some normal sized ones that they'll customize (to a certain extent) that comes 30 to a pack for about $13.  I'm not a Sam's Club girl but they had them at work for our summer kick off last week and they were really good!  But then again, I've never met a cupcake that I didn't like! • I agree Costco is the best bang for your buck

  • I was thinking about Costco too, but they are GINORMOUS! Maybe I'll try Sam's. All I'm really looking for 2 different colored frostings, pink and green. I could probably add my own sprinkles or whatever and then my toppers.

    Thanks Ladies!

  • I've had cupcakes from one of the bigger grocery stores (can't remember if it was Ralphs, Albertsons or Vons) but they were really good too. You could just get plain frosted ones and put out a bunch of candy so the kids can decorate their own! It's really cute to see how each kid decorates their own and it's just another fun project for them!

  • I second Sam's Club - their cupcakes are normal sized and quite tasty. You may be able to get them to customize them to some degree as ours out here in Corona always has cupcake "cakes" in a variety of designs and colors.

  • Ditto to store cupcakes. We had 60 cupakes and I think it was like $25. We had chocolate, strawberry and mint (brown, pink, green) flavored cupcakes, and they were tasty! I also just added my own toppers that I made. Also, you may get some costumization, just ask.

  • grocery store or make them.  i spent the whole night before the party making a gazillion cupcakes.  i bought butter cream icing mix and some fun icing tips.  honestly, people complimented the cupcakes and they were $1 cupcake mix from target!  best thing i've ever done.
  • I did costco cupcakes and asked them to just leave them white (no sprinkles) and I added my own edible dots that I bought at Joann's. They are HUGE but the price worked great!
  • I'm a cupcake expert ... okay, not really, but we have them all the time (or so it seems) at the preschool.  The ones from Albertsons are very good and they will customize them I'm pretty sure.

My best friend did cupcakes from ABC Cakes in Orange.  It's a cake supply store but they also sell cupcakes.  Again, very good.

Also, I'm pretty sure we've had the ones from Sams and they are great if I remember correctly.

  • Cupcakes are so easy to make. If you really want to save money...do them yourself.
  • I have gotten them at Albertons or Pavilions. I've had the one where they put all the cupcakes together in a pattern (like a flower, etc.) and I've also put them on a cupcake stand, which looks really nice. I've used the cupcake stand over and over at varied parties.
