It's funny on 'Everybody Loves Raymond' It's NOT funny IRL.

DH's worst nightmares are coming true.

FIL told DH today that he and SMIL are seriously considering renting the house next door to us.

DH works with his dad and he doesn't get along with his step-mom. They can't afford that house. They don't live that far away as it is. SMIL doesn't realize that I, unlike her daughter, will not be needing her to raise my son for me while I watch tv all day.

DH told them he is not on board with the idea. So much so that if they go through with it he threatened to find a job in the city (an hour away, where my work is) and move us out there. Hopefully they get the hint and stay put or atleast not move next door. Although, I have wanted to move into the city for awhile now to minimize my commute. Either way they put a huge strain on our already strained relationship with them by not asking DH's opinion on it but just coming out and saying "We're gonna be neighbors!"

Seriously, who would want to live next door to your in laws? Maybe we're just private people, but that is just waaaaay to close for comfort.

  • We lived above MIL for about a year (she owns a duplex, so we rented from her).  I love the woman honestly and she is the sweetest person and never got in our business or came over uninvited.  Actually I think we see her more now than when we lived above her.  Anyhow she irritated the SH!!T out of me with little things like slamming doors when I was trying to get DS to sleep , etc.  We have such a better relationship now that we dont live there!  I can only imagine how scarey that might be if you don't even like them that much!

  • I live a block away from my IL's.  I still think a days drive away is best for the sanity of all parties.
  • We live about two blocks from my IL's. They did ask us if we were okay with them moving so close before hand, which we were fine with. We also set boundaries and limits very quickly. My MIL thought living so close would mean we would go to their house for dinner every single night. We had to put a stop to that. Overall, I have to say it's not that bad. If they are going to drop by, they call first. We'll see how it goes when the baby is here though. My MIL is ridiculously excited about being a grandma, so I've been setting boundaries to minimize any problems later.
  • My future MIL lives right next door! :)  It's not that bad now, but I really fear when the baby comes that she is going to stop calling before she comes over.  I have a feeling we will have to move because she will be here every day after work! Hoping for the best- but thinking the worst!
  • I TRY TO KEEP OCEANS BETWEEN ME AND MY PARENTS ! THEY LIVE IN EUROPE 7MTS A YEAR :) AND I LOVE IT THAT WAY
  • OMG no. My in-laws live in a house behind us and we're doing all we can to save up and move the hell away. It's beyond ridiculous. My MIL is BSC however (seriously) Crying

  • I guess I am the only one that likes having the inlaws close. They live about 3 miles away, which out here means there are only two houses between us. My family is all the way across the country so I am thankful that DD and DS have grandparents close by that want to be apart of their life. Yeah sometimes MIL stops by without calling but why should that be a big deal?
