Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Peanut Babies ?

My DS weighs 15lbs 11oz and is 25in. His pedi. told me he is in the 20th percentile for weight and 15% for height. We started him on solids close to a month ago. His pedi. would like him to gain more weight. He eats so much though. I'm not sure what more I can do. I feel so bad that he is little. He was born 3 weeks early. I just wish he would catch up.If you have a little baby is their pedi. worried?  How much does your LO weigh?

Re: Peanut Babies ?

  • My guy is the same way, he is 25 inches 15.5 lbs at his six month.  He gained less than a lb these past 2 months.  We have to go in for a weight check in 6 weeks.  She said he is just petite but they like to make sure he's not losing weight.  I guess I'll start feeding his solids during lunch too.

He sleeps through the night and doesn't seem hungry, but it def alarmed me at first.  My husband is only 5'9 and I'm 5'1 so I think he's just going to be a little guy, lol.

  • See siggy for 6 month stats. I think he is in the 3% range or something.

Our pedi is not worried. As long as he stays on his own curve and keeps gaining all is good. Some people have small babies.

  • Oh and for some reason he was only in the 6th percentile for height and weight??

His pedi. told me to feed him 3X a day fruit or vegetable mixed w/ rice cereal or oatmeal. She said that there isn't too many calories so the rice cereal or oatmeal will help add calories. Also to keep him drinking the same amt. of formula. It just makes me nervous. She didn't seem alarmed she just said she'd like him to gain more weight. So all that plus 32oz of formula a day. Hopefully he will catch up eventually.

  • DD is just over 27in and only 14lbs.  Pedi told me to start feeding cereal 3x's a day along with her other veggies and to try to add another BF session.  We have to go back for a weight check in a month.

My baby was smaller than that at her six month (I can't remember exactly, I'd have to go check), and the pedi wasn't worried at all.

  • DD was 8 lbs 8 oz at birth (90th percentile - b/c of my diabetes), born at 36w5d.

DD is now (at 8 months) about 15 lbs 12 oz, which is between 10-20th percentile.

As long as their growing in a consistent percentile, it's totally fine.

  • Tegan was 6 lbs 4 oz and 19.5 inches at birth. She was in the 10-15th percentile for both height and weight.  By 2 months she was 10.5 lbs, by 4 months 12 lbs 15 oz and at 6 months she was 14 lbs 15 oz. My pediatrician is not concerned at all. Tegan gets 3 solid meals a day (2-4 oz at each meal) and 24 oz of formula within a day. She STTN and is happy, healthy and growing.

ETA: She was 23.5 inches at 4 months and 25 inches at 6 months, I can't remember exactly what she was at 2 months, but I think it was about 22 inches.

  • Hey there Kelly- its been a long time since we have talked! My DD just had her 6 month and is 12 pounds even(3rd%) and 25 inches(25th%). Her pedi is a little concerned but not too much since she has been in the 3-5% range since birth. We are also battling severe colic (she has food allergies and was having blood in her stool). I tried rice cereal today and she hates it and wont eat it (we delayed solids due to her food allergies). I think that just as long as your DS stays in the same % range then you should be ok. You may ask about seeing a nutritionist or talking to your pedi about if your DS may have reflux which could cause weight loss. Good Luck- I hope all is well with you and your little family!

  • Both of my kids have been really small. Both under the 5th percentile for everything. No doctor has ever expressed any concern about them. DH is tall but really thin 6' but only 115lbs. I am average size as an adult, but as a child I was very small. So small that hormone therapy was suggestion, ut then I hit a growth spurt around 8.

I don't think that adding more food would do anything for Ds's small stature. He already eats a ton of food for a baby his age. Our doctor always tells that if they are proportional and growing that is a good sign.
  • 6 month stats:

    Height 25 1/2"
    Weight 15 lbs 12.5 oz

She gained 2 lbs 4 oz since her 4 month check and only gained 1 inch.  Her pedi said she is just fine.

    This.

DD was 13 pounds 3 oz, 26.5 inches at her 6 month visit.  She is growing well on her curve.  She's tall and skinny, always has been.  We're not worried.
