What to wear to a Mormon wedding reception?

Tomorrow evening we (the whole family, kids included) need to go to a wedding reception for a co-worker of mine. He got married at an out of town temple a couple weeks ago and there's a reception at his parent's house tomorrow evening. I'm not 100% certain, but I'm assuming that it's going to be a backyard outdoor kind of thing (the invitation just says 6-8pm and there was no RSVP. It was also made clear that this was going to be a kid-friendly event.)

With that in mind, how formal do we need to be? Can ds just wear a button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a pair of khaki shorts? And a sundress on dd?

As for myself, do you think a casual sundress would also work? Also, I don't own a single dress with sleeves. Everything is sleeveless. Normally that wouldn't be an issue, but this happens to be a Mormon couple. Is it taboo to wear something that they would consider "immodest?" I *really* don't want to buy something to wear just to this and I don't really have any dressy clothes beyond my summer sundresses and casual summer skirts.

  • I think sleeveless will be fine.  Especially if its not very low cut in the front and not very short.

  • just because they have their "Mormon" rules, doesn't mean you are going to get hte side eye for not following them.

You will be fine with sleeveless.

My Mormon nanny often dressed my kids in shorts, or sundresses without hesitation even though she'd never wear those things herself.  And it was not like that is ALL my kids had in their wardrobe.

  • Sleeveless should be fine. I know that the Mormons do wear sleeveless-- they tend toward the 'edge of the shoulder' style strapless rather than the spaghetti end, but you should be fine.

I would skip the really low cut stuff, though. Stick out tongue

  • Is the reception in a Church? That is the only place that I would not wear sleevless and it's just for my own comfort. You would be fine just wearing dress pants imo, I do it all the time.
  • I have no advice really, but wanted to say that when I read the title fast I thought you were going to a moron wedding in which case, who cares what you wear.  :)
