Horrible horrible diaper rash...help?

She's so raw, it hurts me to look at it.   It started suddenly yesterday after a particularly water-y poop, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better with desitin, which usually clears her right up.   I'm changing her diaper like crazy, but I'm thinking I should probably have her air it out for a bit?

Also...I'm thinking it's probably food related...but I'm not sure which food is the culprit...   Literally, THIS WEEK I decided to stop following the 3 day rule and this is what I get!   GAH!    It's so sad, her poor booty!

Okay.  //rant.   Help?

Re: Horrible horrible diaper rash...help?

  • Wyatt had horrible diaper rash when he was really little, and I tried everything, Desitin, A&D, Butt paste, nothing worked. FInally my grandma recommended using Corona ointment. I found it at the drug store by the lotions, its in a yellow bottle, its very thick, and it worked like a charm!! Cleared the diaper rash in just a day or two. I highly recommend it to anyone!

I sure hope your little one starts to feel better! :)

  • I would let her air out a bit.  Worth a try...
  • Is she teething, maybe? I know that doesn't really help the diaper rash, but...

When my DD had it really bad a few months back, we finally gave in and used steroid cream (cortisone) prescribed by the pedi. Worked immediately...

Hope she feels better soon :).

  • If you can, I would definitely let her be diaperless and air out for a while.  Maybe let her play outside on an old towel if the weather is nice?  I have found Boudreaux's Butt Paste to be the best fix.  Also, I don't know what kind of wipes you use but anything with fragrance or alcohol in them will irritate her raw skin.  You might try either switching to something unscented (I like the target brand unscented) or just using soft washcloths and warm water until her tush heals.
  • we use lotramin whenever LO gets a bad rash.  clears it up a.s.a.p.

  • When DS had diaper rash that wouldn't go away, we let it air out and it was fine shortly after.

  • We have went through this so much lately that I have literally tried everything! The 2 best things were Resinol (it was by the prescription area at Walgreens and $12 for a little jar) and Triple Paste which is also expensive but both worked overnight!

I'd try the Triple Paste first because you can use it over and over, the Resinol is only twice per day and was hard to find.

Also, we'd put it all over her bottom and then let her play on a towel for a few hours. Also, putting Aveeno oatmeal bath soak in her tub helped, GL!!

  • Air it out. It will help tons. If it dosen't get much better in a few days call the pedi.

  • when my dd got diaper rash our dr. recommended lotrim--for althete's foot--that stuff cleared her up almost by the next diaper change.   leave a diaper off-find a nice blanket and play in the fresh air outside--that sometimes helps too!

  • I agree.. it could be a reaction to teething, not food.  C had a really bad bout of it about a month ago and since then, six new teeth have popped out.

We just had this happen after trying peaches.  It hurt him so bad, he would start crying before we even opened his diaper, and shrinking back because he knew it was coming.  He even cried in the bath, which he usually loves!  I felt so terrible!  It lasted a few days, and airing out and Desitin didn't help us either.  I just tried to be super soft when wiping, and he was usually ok after the new diaper was on.  It just started clearing up today.  Poor baby!

  • All above suggestions are good, but in case I missed it, DON'T use the regular disposable butt wipes on her rash while it's inflamed. You'll make it worse. My toddler has really sensitive skin and we switched to cloth wipes. I make a solution of 2 cups water, 2 oz witch hazel, 2 oz aloe vera juice (in the digestive aid section of pharmacy), and 2 drops tea tree oil. It cleared up his 6 month butt rash in ONE WEEK!
  • We also use lotramin- it'll clear anything by the next diaper change!

Also, I am a fan of the hairdryer.  DD loves it and its great for after bath time or any diaper change to make sure she is really dry before putting on a new diaper.

  • OMG THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.    There is so much amazing advice in this thread my head is spinning.   Seriously.   I have the butt paste, and I'm going to stick here on a towel outside diaperless to start.   I'll be running down this list from there.   Thank you!
