Why are maternity clothes so ugly??

I envy all those pregnant girls who can look awesome because apparently I am not one of them!  I am just starting to show and although I don't need maternity shirts yet, I am almost ready for some maternity pants/shorts.  I was checking out oldnavy.com and most of their stuff is just not cute!  Right now I am just looking frumpy..haha..

Any recommendations on where to find cute but affordable maternity clothes?

The same reason they are all HUGE!!!  As a petite person who still shops in the Jr.s section because that is all I can find that fits.

I got a lot of stuff from Motherhood Maternity and a few, very few things from Target.  A few cheap tshirts from walmart, a pair of capris from Kmart, and some things from JCPennys.  But 99% of it was HUGE in the butt/thighs even when I was 36wks pg with twins and wearing a S/XS in maternity.

I gave up on finding things that were actually pretty.  As long as it didnt fall off or look too baggy in the butt/thighs I didnt care anymore.

Not that we should promote teen pg but really, someone should make maternity clothes in jr. sizes and not just petite and womens sizes.  There are some really petite women who need smaller sizes in maternity clothes as well as teens who do get pg.

I dont think I had anything from ON because like you are finding it was all FUGLY!!  Maybe one pair of capris I think.  Its been a while so I cant remember.
  • Target has some cute clothes. They just run really really big.

Most of my maternity is from Motherhood. I generally have to try everything on because some of it fits well, and some is tent-like and frumpy.

I've found Old Navy is hit or miss too, and I generally need a size smaller.

I've often wondered what all those skinny women out there do. I was an average size pre-pg (usually a medium, sometimes a small). I tend to gain a lot of weight all over when pg. My pre-pg pants are a size 6. My pg pants right now at 37 weeks are a size 12 or a large. I still have to buy a medium in most maternity shirts so they fit in the shoulders. At Target I still need a small in shirts. If someone started out as a small or extra small, they probably wouldn't even fit into Target maternity at the end.

Oh, and Gap has some really cute clothes, and they tend to run more true to size. They're just too expensive in general for me.

I was 5' 3" and 107 when I was PG w/ DD. I finally had to make my own pants. I could not find any pants, other than $200 at Pea in the Pod, that fit. And I didn't wear maternity shirts for a long time because I felt so frumpy in those tent ones. Even with DS, I was 114 lbs and the small at Target was still too big at the end. There does need to be an affordable option for petite moms. And I don't consider $60+ jeans affordable for something you wear for 5-6 months. One shirt I bought at JCP was never worn and I gave it away w/ tags on because it was too big. I do love Gap because of their insanely out of touch vanity sizing; hello XS shirt at 9 months PG. I did get some Gap stuff, but all of it on serious markdown. If you hit Gap sales right, those are the best.

  • I had to stick with Gap, because while I am not long and lean my hips and thighs didn't get any bigger just my baby belly and nothing else fit right.

I splurged on 2 pr of jeans 3 pair of shorts and lots of cute shirts. I wanted to be comfy.

I also liked Liz Lange Target, but yeah some stuff was funky.

  • With Blaire, who was born in december, I was mostly winter maternity, but I did buy some summer stuff in July because I was growing out of my regular stuff.  i  hate Motherhood and personally don't think it holds up well in the wash.  Before Mimi closed merged w/ Pea in a Pod, I bought just a few cute summer things from there.  I didn't wear them at all with Natalie b/c she was a March baby, so I used winter stuff from preg. #1 and bought some more.  Mostly Mimi, Target, and I get all of my pants from Kohls's, JCP, because of the sale prices combined with coupons.  But, dresses and tops came from Mimi, Gap, and just a handful from motherhood.

this time, however I needed little winter, but mainly summer, and KNOWING I will have no more pregnancies I hated to spend a ton on summer stuff.  I picked up a few things at Target, got some capris and shorts at JCP, but most of the tops I've bought now came from the Clearance rack at Dillard's a few weeks ago.  I got some tops that were bigger around the bottom and they are really cute.  In fact the top I'm wearing my in my sig isn't maternity, and it came from the Jr's section at JCP.  I've gotten more compliments on that top.  Plus, it's super cute and compfy.

I refuse to give up being stylish just b/c I'm pregnant :)

  • Check out www.nextdirect.com .  They have some cute tops and dresses there.  I'm already planning to order a few things from there when I get pregnant again.
