When did you take the rail off of DC's bed?

DS requested that we take the rail off his twin bed tonight, so we did. Now I am scared he will falling out of bed all night (or else calling for me all night because his stuffed animals fell out of bed!)  This isn't way too early, right? When did you take off the rail, and was your DC OK?

Re: When did you take the rail off of DC's bed?

  • We never did a rail.  We did the toddler bed after the crib and he fell out of that 5 or 6 times, but it was so close to the ground he could just lift himself back up.    When he moved to a big bed, he fell out 3 times that I remember.  Only once did I have to go and put him back into bed.  All the other times, he just climbed back up.

  • My older two are still in their toddler beds (converted cribs) but neither has had a rail since we converted them at about 18 mos.

Is the mattress on a box spring, or is just just on a bunker board thing?  I would just be worried about the height of it....the top of B & N's beds are only about 18" I think, so it's not far to fall. ;)

  • we took it off last summer because she would lean on it & then fall over.  She never fell out of bed while sleeping though once we took it off.

It's a regular twin bed, but no box spring. I did put some pillows next to the bed in case he falls.

This is horrible to admit, but I'm not worried about him hurting himself, just me not getting any sleep!  Embarrassed

  • I just took Em's off last weekend. I took one side off first and then the second side a week later. She did fall off the bed a few times but she hasn't done it in a few nights. She is in a full size bed with box spring.

I had to get those suckers off there - it was such a pain to change the bed!!! : )

  • DS had a toddler bed (no rails)just before age 2, then he got his twin size bunk beds (no rail, sleeps on bottom) a few months ago- he has yet to fall out of bed. *knock on wood* I did stuff a caterpiller/body pillow thing between his bed and the wall because there was a gap there that he could get stuck in.
  • DD still uses a rail - she prefers to sleep perpendicular in her bed!

However, when we were on vacation she slept in a regular bed, which she rolled out of. The problem wasn't hitting the floor, though. She hit her face on the wooden board that holds the mattress on the bedframe (does this make sense?) and gave her a rather nasty cut across her face. So make sure you have a pillow covering that area!

  • We have never used one.  DD doesn't move when she sleeps and has never fallen.

  • We also never had a rail I put some pillows down the first two nights but he was fine.

DS moved a little before 2 1/2 into a twin bed with no rails. Once he falls asleep I put his big stuffed dog on the side of him so he would have to roll over that to roll out of bed. He fell out once the first week but hasn't since then.?
  • 4.5... but only because ds2 slept with us and i used it on my bed. Ds1 did just fine, he fell maybe 3 or 4 times and just climbed in and went back to sleep. We did hear him fall and checked on him :-) Your ds will do great, especially if he wants it off.
  • Anthony hasn't had one for about 6 months and he has done great!  I bet he will be just fine.
  • DS was probably 2 1/2 when we took the rail off. He fell out once, and that was it.
