New here-question about clomid use in males for low testoterone

DH has been dx with low testosterone and has been receiving injections every 10 days to raise it but after I did some research and talked to his doctor we found out that this is not the best treatment for someone who is TTC.  Very frustrating!  Dr now wants us to go see a Reproductive Endo because she thinks he needs to be put on Clomid instead.  He has not had a SA done yet either.  Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: New here-question about clomid use in males for low testoterone

  • My DH had low testosterone. I can't remember the other important factor they check in the bw, but that part was fine.

I asked his urologist about prescribing clomid, and he said it wouldn't help.  He said the clomid would only work on the other aspect (the one I can't remember).  Since that was fine, we just had to hope it would rise.

The good news is we were able to get lots of spem from a biopsy.  DH had a vasectomy, so we had to do a biopsy.

Sorry I couldn't remember the other part.

  • Dh remembered TH and LH.

  • Hubby has low testosterone and was on testopel (a synthetic testosterone pellet that is placed under the skin). Totally the wrong treatment for someone TTC! Since then we have gone to a male reproductive endocrinologist. He plans on putting DH on hcG shots. It will cause DH's body to make its own testosterone as well as get his body making sperm again.

  • Thanks ladies!  I had also read about the hcG shots so that may be better than Clomid and easier to tolerate.  Has your DH had any bad side effects from the hcG shots?

  • Fabulous Mrs.P - I just read your siggy.  So did they say that DH needed to wait until Oct to start the shots?  I'm guessing the other testosterone replacement needs to get out of his system or something first?

  • Yes, we have to wait for all the testosterone to be out of his system and we need to do 2 months of baseline bloodwork as his urologist really didn't do any of this stuff before putting him on testopel. So, the doctor explained we're basically having to do what the urologist should have done at the beginning just to make sure we have a good baseline. Then he will begin the hcG shots in October.
