Babywise

Anyone else notice a growing trend toward babywise lately? When I was PG w DS1 I didn't know anyone who used it, and everyone I talked to agreed it was bad, bad, bad. Now I've seen a number of posts on 0-3 of women who use babywise and met a handful IRL in the last month. What gives? Has it changed in some way?

Re: Babywise

  • I don't know anyone in real life, but I just think the 0-3s aren't getting flamed enough for reading it ;)

Just kidding. Kind of. But when I was on that board, you didn't even mention BW without getting flamed.

  • I was shocked when women from my local playgroup suggested it..i hope it's not becoming popular again!

I suspect that the "trends" on The Bump correspond with the views of whoever the dominant, popular Bumpies of the moment are.  There are probably still a lot of people on 0-3 who are against BW, but they aren't speaking up.  And, unfortunately, back when I was on 0-3, there probably were a lot of people who were pro-BW, but they just weren't speaking up.

  • It is my understanding that the newer publishings of Babywise are much less strict in their scheduling, because of this I think many more people are reading it and liking the concepts.  The original inceptions of Babywise which were VERY scheduling strict have been refuted so well medically that Babywise itself has changed.

My understanding is that newer versions talk a lot more about knowing and responding to your child's cues and working WITH your child to set a schedule.  That said, I still don't think that attempting to establish an artificial schedule with your young child is a good idea and Babywise still says that you CAN do just that.

  • I have read a little on BW to know it's bad but not enough to actually state why and how kwim? Plus I have noticed people that are even doing CIO on 0-3 are having people back up their choices so more and more I am just not replying to those posts since I have been told I am "mean" and I know it all because I refuse to let my 3 month old CIO and think it is disgusting for anyone to do that at that age.

  • I admit that when I was pregnant and had NO IDEA how to take care of a baby, I found the idea of BW attractive.  I do have the new copy and I've read it, although it was a long time ago.  What attracted me to it at first was that it told me how many naps my kid should have, and how to work feedings around naps.  I really had no idea at the time and I was glad someone could spell it out for me.  The other poster who said it is not as strict anymore is right, they tell you to demand feed now.  That all being said, it is important to read ANY parenting book with a healthy dose of give and take.  Once I really read the whole thing and got some real life experience it did not jive with my parenting style at all and the book is now collecting dust on my shelf.
  • Yes, people always told me to read it when DD was a newborn. I didnt know what it was at the time, but wasn't about to add another baby book to my shelf! I am surprised that people still read it after all that stuff came out about the author.
  • NOBODY on 0-3 should be doing CIO. My pedi is not particularly AP (one of them gives awful BF advice) and they still said flat out NO CIO until after 6 months. Drilled it into my head. The absolute earliest I've ever seen (and this was in a parenting mag, not a book) was 3 months- I think that's too early, but before 3 months is just cruel.

I remember when BW/CIO was flamed up one side and down the other, even for older babies.

    ditto all of this.

I used to lurk on the tri boards before I was pregnant, and IMO they were much more pro-AP back then than they are now. People no longer get flamed for things like BW....but those of us who are anti-cio are now meanies.

I've been thinking about this... DD was born in December, but a lot of the girls just ahead of me (October and November mammas) were way different than the 0-3 crowd, now.. there seemed to be more inherent AP stuff on the tri and age boards... now I don't relate at all.  (I don't relate to "my" group, either...)

I have a friend IRL who is doing BW; when I first heard I was horrified, but like pps said, it's much less strict now, suggests feeding on demand and learning your child's cues and working with them to get to a schedule.  Still NMS, and idk how by-the-book my friend is, but from the time I've spent around her and her LO, they're both happy and have a great bond.

Anything can be bad when taken to the extreme, it's all about finding balance.  Like I said, BW is NMS, but as long as it's not super strict and CIO isn't involved, to each their own
