Name opinions...will it make a difference?

We have decided that we want to name our LO Donald Greig (if it's a boy) after  DH's grandfather and my father (yes, it is pronounced like Greg and it will be spelled that way as that is how my father spells his name)  DH and I are debating whether to stay with the traditional Donald, or change it to Donal, a name I like a bit more.  My thought here is that Donal will be called Donald anyway so really what would be the point of naming him Donal.  What do you think?

Re: Name opinions...will it make a difference?

  • Why would you call him Donald if his name was Donal?  I'm confused!
  • If you are honoring someone I feel it should be by using his real name, not creating a name you like better. You can always call him Donal, but as you said most people will either think you forgot, had a typo and missed the D or will miss hear you and say Donald anyway, making him correct people for the next 100 years.

  • I agree that Donal would be mis-heard as Donald. I would name him Donald and call him Don or Donny.

  • I started thinking about it, and I think I would call him by Greig instead. But if I called him Greig, I would use that as the first name so it would be Greig Donald.

  • Donal =  Ick!

Donald is not my thing, but a way better choice.

  • I think that you should do what you like best.  If we have a girl, we are naming her after my deceased aunt - Julie.  I like Julia better, and, since we called my aunt, "Aunt Jules," I figure that I can name her Julia and still be naming her after my aunt - we didn't call her Julie, after all...

I'm with you - I like Donal better than Donald.  I especially like it with the different spelling for Greig.  If you know that you're naming your baby after someone, then you know that.  I don't think that it has to be exact exact. :-)

  • I'm pretty against naming a kid a name that will forever be mis-heard/mis-pronounced. I would stick with Donald.  (And definitely call him Greig or Donny)

  • I would definitely stick with Donald.  I prefer it over Donal and I agree that it would be misunderstood anyway if you dropped the D.

  • I would just go with Donald, it sounds pretty much the same anyway and Donal just makes me think someone just forgot to put the d at the end.
  • Stick with Donald Greig Yes
