DD's party is Sat....we're serving dinner and cake and opening gifts. I'm stuck as to when I should have her do her cake. I originally thought right after she eats since she'll be in her highchair, but sometimes when she's done eating, no matter what you give her, she won't eat it. But I'm afraid if I do gifts after eating that it'll be a long wait to have cake and she'll be more tired since its closer to her bedtime (we're starting the party at 5pm). Maybe give her a break between dinner and cake but wait to do gifts later? Hmm...
We did food, the kids played a little, then cake, then gifts. If it's just a light dinner you could serve the cake immeidaitly but most people wait a bit to eat dessert
I would give DD hers right away while she's in the highchair, everyone can sing, she can get into the smash cake. We did this at Justin's party- then by the time he was cleaned off, I put on a pot of coffee and cut/plate the cake it gave people almost 30 mins before dessert.

This is what my sister did and it worked well. Gave everyone a time to digest while they watched my nephew try his cake. ;-)
Re: Bday party WWYD
Wait a bit in between. Not just for DD, but for everyone else too. Most people will want to digest before they have cake. Do gifts last.

Enough time for digestion, to get the kids geared up for presents and enough time in between for cake.
