Better safe than sorry, but I just checked the model number on the crib I was given second hand and sure enough it's been recalled. Its annoying because their child was literally sleeping in it yesterday and two kids have used it and are fine...but reading about the hazards of it I'm thinking we're not going to use it. Its because its a drop side crib and the plastic clasps can break, but reading the Consumer safety recall reasons, there were a few incidents of suffocation, so I think we'll pass...
Guh, so much for saving money!
Re: Sh*t, my crib's been recalled...
This. What a bummer!
I'm so confused with the crib recalls. I heard they were recalling ALL drop side cribs. My crib that DS is sleeping in is from when I was a little girl-- both my dad and I looked up the recall website to see if the crib had been recalled but we can't find anything on it--- and it's a drop crib... Does anyone know what gives?

If the crib is that old, the company won't have a kit to fix it because you have used it far past it's life expectancy. lol. They don't assume that cribs that old are still in use, because they recommended years ago that you no longer use those cribs. (The slats weren't regulated back then, so there is no guarantee that LO can't get stuck in them or something goofy like that. That and children't furniture wasn't regulated the same way it is now.)
If the company is still in business...

It is a safety issue, like crib bumpers. Read the info, weigh the options, and do what you are comfortable with.
On some drop sided cribs, the bolts/mechanisms wore out and it suffocated some children. Also, children were injured since they could climb out of their cribs at a very young age. Almost all drop sided cribs have been recalled in the past 5 years for this reason. So the government decided that drop sided cribs were a safety hazard and said that they can no longer be made or sold and that all the ones that were are being recalled.
It is the same thing that happened with the crib bumpers in Canada. There were incidents of children being suffocated by the bumpers, which was probably because they weren't used correctly; strings were too short, long, or loose. In any case, crib bumpers are no longer sold in Canada.
If it worries you, nail the sides of the crib so that the sides don't move anymore and you are fine. (That is all the kit really does; it keeps the sides from moving.)

I didn't think this was the case. I thought the govt. was just going to ban the making/selling/reselling of dropside cribs, not that they had ALL been recalled. I could be very wrong but this was my understanding. We bought a used drop side crib. The plastic parts were not installed the correct way, so I fixed them and I'm nonestly NOT worried about it...but that's me.
The company is still in business. I just tried to find recall information for the crib less than 2 months ago, and there was nothing... I will try to contact the company and see what they say. The crib is pretty safe, the slats are the same width as cribs I've seen today, and my dad kept in in premium condition. My DS has been sleeping in it for a six+ months now and the only concern I've had is that the drop side of the crib will drop occasionally if its not locked in place all the way. (If your my DF at least... LOL-- never happened to me) but we keep the screws tight, and the bar oiled and it works seamlessly.
I'm only 5'1... how on earth would I put a sleeping baby in a crib (at the lowest position) and not drop him? If the side is all the way up, if DS is sleeping, I can usually just reach over the side to hold his hand to say goodnight. Ay mee...
