Has anyone given a cough medicine at this age?

Ben was up ALL night with a cough, I did everything in my power to help him besides give any meds. I did 20 minutes sitting in the bathroom with a steam shower, cool mist humidifier right next to our bed, and a breathing treatment and while it all helped reduce the coughing from happening every 30 seconds or so, it's still bad. Is there anything out there that I can give him in the form of meds?

I am too nervous to try cough medicine with my son.  I know other people who have though.  When he gets a really bad cough we put a lot of Vicks Baby Rub on his chest and back.  It is supposed to act as a cough suppressant.

Katie's been prescribed 3 different cough medicines.  They all have the same ingredients as the OTC kinds.

I did w/DD back before cough medicine was evil.  Honestly, it didn't even really help for more than an hour or so. 

Lots of liquids and the occasional teaspoon of honey to coat her throat were the only things that helped.

We have given cough medicine and it did help, letting him get some sleep since he had spent a few nights up coughing.  My mom is a pharmacist and she said to just be sure that we had an accurate dose, that incorrect dosage was one of the reasons over the counter cough meds were suddenly taboo., kids were getting too much.

I called the pedi this morning not expecting to get ahold of them for a while but I was patched through to a nurse right away. She gave me the go ahead for 1/2 tsp of delsym, it has helped a ton...not got rid of it but I'll take the results. Thanks!

We bought the Hyland's brand natural cough medicine last week - there are two kinds and we tried them both.  They worked very well   We found them at Walmart.
