Help please...

Harrison is a very easy going baby.  He eats like a champ and then stays awake happily looking around and then nods off all on his own.

Oliver has trouble eating and then fusses afterwards.  I give him gas drops and do bicycle legs and then rock him to sleep but here's the problem- he never really falls asleep- he cries on and off the entire time.  Yesterday he maybe napped for an hour total.

We're on a 9,12,3,6,repeat schedule and they had been skipping their midnight feedings but the last couple of nights Oliver has woken up for it.  I hate to say Colic- but it seems that may be the case- he's only happy when he's being held.

Re: Help please...

  • Do you have a carrier like the moby wrap?  I always found it helped when a little pressure was applied to my DS tummy.  This way he would get pressure and be held at the same time.
  • Could it be reflux? That sounds alot like DS at that age.  The Dr. put him on Zantac for 2 months and he was fine - he grew out of it.  It was amazing the difference I saw in him almost immediately.

  • He doesn't really spit up at all but maybe silent reflux....

and he hates to be worn! I thought it would be the answer but I have tried all types of baby wearing and nada

  • Are you swaddling?  If not, he may need that to really settle down and he won't fight sleep so much.

Have you tried a swing yet?  My babies lived in the swings for naps until they were 6 months.  Otherwise they wanted to be held, too.

  • could be silent reflux! i would ask pedi for advice.  Like pp said this is exactly what my DS was like and right around 6 months we stopped the zantac and he is doing GREAT!

I also suggest swaddeling at this age.  Really helped my little ones sleep.  I also found with DS reflux raising his head when he is asleep helped him (i used a positioner and swaddel to ensure he didnt wiggle into a position he couldnt get out of)

    GL.... it gets easier!

  • My Ellie has silent reflux  Lilly has regular reflux (we see her spitting it up)  and  Ellie was doing the same thing until Ped had us thicken both of their feedings with cereal.
