Weekly "What is DC reading?" thread

I know there was one on 24+, but I don't think we've done one over here on this board yet.  I'm always on the lookout for new books to read (and get DS hooked on).

Any objections to starting one?

If not, then I'll take it on!

Go ahead and post what books your DC is reading these days in this thread, if you want to.  Smile

  • Great idea!

His faves right now are: Dig, Dig, Digging; Brown Bear, Brown Bear; and a spanish language book that I can't recall the name of.

  • His current fav is "Goodnight Nola".  It's a book about New Orleans and is a play on "Goodnight Moon". It's adorable!

  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - I have heard about and seen this book a hundred times.  Why, oh why didn't I open one and look inside before now?  My little alphabet obsessed boy is in love with this book!  We've read it every night for over two weeks now.  He was even singing it in the car yesterday.

I Am Going! - Mo Willems.  Our go-to guy.  This is the 5th or 6th Elephant & Piggie book we've read.  DS loves them all.

We've also been reading and listening to The Great Gracie Chase on CD.

AND Our #1 fave right now is Go Away Big Green Monster

I do lots of activities with this one at school and hope to start them with Katie this week.

  • Horton Hears a Who

Madeline (the original and the others)

    A Visitor for Bear

    The Lorax

    The Cat in the Hat

    Ferdinand

    The Giving Tree

I love that DD is getting into longer books, but DS can't sit still that long.  So we're doing one book as a family and then splitting up.  So DD can read 1-2 longer books with Dad and I read a few Sandra Boynton books and Pat the Bunny with DS.

Umm, I need this book! Where do I find it? :)

DD is still very into anything Fancy Nancy and Knuffle Bunny.  We haven't bought a whole lot of new books lately because she only wants to read the same ones over and over.

You can get it at B&N! Check it out:

Last night, it was Hooper Humperdink by Dr. Seuss.  We have two copies, so I read one and he follows along and recites what he remembers in the other one.  I loved this book as a child, and one of the copies is my old one.

But we have been reading a lot of Where the Wild Things Are.  I just brought it out a couple weeks ago, and he loves it.

  • Both my kids went through a phase where they were absolutely obsessed with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.  We can all three still recite the entire book.  It's a really good book for preschoolers.

Right now, both kids are reading on their own and DS's turn for read-aloud chapter book is almost over.

Mom Reads Aloud:  The Catwings series.  It's 5 very short novellas (each one is a longer short story, actually) by Ursula K. LeGuin, about alley cats born with wings who manage to escape the city.  It's a good read-aloud for older preschoolers because the characters are accessible.  More words on the page than pictures, so kids have to be able to stay focused and listen to enjoy this.  Both my kids could handle this at around age 4.

Kids On Their Own:  DD -- The Supernaturalist, by Eoin Colfer; DS -- Bad Kitty Gets A Bath.  It's the first chapter book he's tackled on his own.  He's read it 17 times.

We got this from the library and it's adorable. It's the list of all the things that go into the cake -- Mack's the dog.

She's also really gotten into Dr. Seuss's ABC book.

  • Good post!

My 5 yr old is reading Berenstain Bears, those Step Into Reading books from Walmart or Target... We have almost all of them!  Me Too, Woody; Thomas Breaks A Promise; Decepticons Attack!; I Am Optimus Prime; etc.

Those are the best b/c there is one or two sentences on each page, they are always about current movies or toys, and he is reading them on his own.  LOVE them!

  • The itsy bitsy spider by Iza Trapani, The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs & Ham, When I'm Big(pop up book),  10 little ladybugs by Melanie Gerth and   10 rubber duckies by Dawn Bentley( I think she mostly likes the squeaking duck). In additional, they both really like baby einstein's pretty poems and wonderful words book.
