Tell me about your C-Sections

Alas, this is the path that I'm going to have to take.  The Dr. said even if Miller does turn, then we'll still do a section due to his size.

I don't have any specific questions, per se, I just want to know the general stuff.  How was your recovery?  What stuff did you use while recovering?  What stuff do I need at home on hand when we leave the hospital?  Anything else you can think of that would be helpful.

Re: Tell me about your C-Sections

  • I had a very positive c-section experience.  The only thing that sucks about the actual c-section is that you can't hold your baby immediately.  But I got to hold her about 2 hours after she was born.

Recovery went very well for me.  I knew kind of what to expect though because I had had an abdominal surgery before.  You are going to be VERY sore...like imagine how your abs feel after you have done lots of sit-ups and then multiply it by at least 10.  As hard as it is going to be, the next day when they let you get up, get up and get moving.  It will help with the healing process.

I didn't really need all the stuff they say you need for a vaginal delivery, except the pads (although my pp bleeding wasn't bad at all..no worse than a period really and it cut off after 2 weeks).  Ibuprofen was my friend as well.  Take the pain meds they give you too.

It is really important that you have help around the house.  You'll need your rest.  If your mom or MIL or someone else can come help you let them.

I can tell you more specific answers as to how a csection will go if you are looking for the technical stuff, but I hope I helped :)  In my opinion they are not bad at all...but like I said I had a positive experience.

  • I had an unplanned c/s after over 13 hours of labor.  It wasn't easy...but I don't know how much of that is bc I actually labored. My block only worked on half of my abdomen and they had to dope me up pretty heavily afterwards bc my incision was on fire.

But I agree with Candi about the moving around.  I really think that helped.  And accept help that is offered.  Don't feel guilty about it.

My pp bleeding was pretty bad for close to a month and (TMI) I had a lot of really large clots (enough that my OBs office had me come back in).

It took close to a month before I felt any sort of normal again...I'd have OK days and then days where I was hurting pretty badly.  But I only took the pain meds at night after the first week.

  • I think you have a better c-section and recovery on the ones that are planned. I had a planned c-sec and my recovery was very easy. Get up and move around the next day and don't try to go without the meds they give you. I thought I was good until I walked too much and the pain meds didn't catch up until the next day.

At home, rest is important, be sure to have help. It will be needed. I bled for about two weeks and it was very light. I took tylenol extra strength and the pain meds they sent home. I used them all. I felt normal after a week and half.

    Good luck with your surgery.

  • I forgot to add mine was an unplanned c-section after a failed induction and laboring 14 hours.
  • I had a planned C-section and I had an easy recovery.  Most of the girls have described what I'd tell you.

As far as recovery - I did buy some HUGE granny panties (seriously - size 13 Fruit of the Loom Briefs - from Dollar Tree no less - LOL).  I called them parachute panties - but ....  they came up way past my belly button/incision line so I didn't run risk of the waist band hitting the incision.

The mesh panties they give you at the hospital are "ok" but I liked using Always pads and they stick to everything excep the mesh panties - LOL.

oh ...and also - you might consider getting your bikini area waxed/shaved before the c-section.  While I am not a jungle woman by any means, I had a really bad encounter with electric clippers and an abrupt nurse about 30 seconds before they wheeled me into the operating room.

Oh yeah I agree with this...I actually took your advice and did this :)  Was so glad too because I didn't want anything touching my incision.

Thanks everyone.  I was expecting most all of that, however glad you mentioned the "parachute panties" I don't want the incision irritated before it even has a chance to heal.

Sarah, you crack me up with an "unforunate incident" I can totally see something like that happening to me.

  • I had a planned c-section as well - planned the day before. :)  I would say my experience was positive, I felt back to myself within 2 weeks.  My post partum bleeding was pretty heavy and lasted about 3.5 weeks.  Super ditty on the granny panties, Fruit of the Loom briefs is exactly what I used - but I used them during pregnancy as well.  They were good for holding the very large pads they had at the hospital.

I was also glad that I had night gowns instead of pants, also because of the risk of something hitting/touching my incision.

Maybe TMI but I had trouble "going" for a while afterwards.  I left the hospital without doing it and even after having taken stool softners for days.  I think it was about 5 days pp when I finally went and it was not cute at all!  I took the stool softners (Senakot) for about 2 weeks pp.

Ditto everyone else, take it easy and accept the help. I didn't change one diaper in the hospital - DH and my mom did and then they'd hand DS to me.  It wouldn't been to uncomfortable leaning over the baby carrier.

    Good luck!

  • Know I am commenting late...what else is new??? Mine wasn't planned but wasn't bad. I had my c/s at 12:00 midnight bn Thursday and Friday and on Friday afternoon was asking if I could get out of bed to get a shower since I hadn't since Thursday morning and felt gross. They wouldn't let me get up until Saturday morning though. It really wasn't that bad. I was sore the first couple of days but nothing un-manageable. I took maybe 2 of the 10 pain pills they sent home. I will agree the not getting to hold the baby for a couple of hours wasn't cool at all. I was very specific (this may make me sound like a control freak but oh well...) that no one except for DH got to hold/see DS until we had spent some time together...just the three of us.

I did wear gaucho pants for about 2 weeks after though...they were most comfortable.
