IKEA crib mattresses?

Does anyone have these?  Are they firm?

We are going with the Gulliver cribs from IKEA for the twins.  I just noticed that their mattresses are significantly cheaper than the ones I was going to buy from BRU.  I just want to make sure they are firm/safe enough.  TIA!

Re: IKEA crib mattresses?

  • if I remember right... Baby Bargains did NOT recommend the IKEA mattresses (despite raving about their cribs).     I believe their complaint was that the mattresses didn't fit well against the crib sides, leaving large gaps.   They recommended getting a mattress elsewhere.
Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation.

Thanks!  Now that you mention it, I think I remember reading that.  I'll have to look it up in the book.

BB must have made that rec in a later version of the book b/c i am sure we bought the ikea mattress (to go with the Hensvik crib) on BB's rec.  however, we did experience the gap issue.  it happened after we lowered the mattress - there are gaps at the corners.  couldn't find much about it online, and when we contacted ikea they said to bring the crib/mattress in.  since the store is 3 hours away from us, we weren't about to do that, and just stuffed the gaps with washcloths.  they may have rectified this problem, and/or it may not apply to all of their crib/mattress combinations.  i would insist that they show you how the mattress fits (on both settings) on the floor model.  hate to give up the awesome price if it's not actaully an issue, you know?

ETA:  We got the Sultan Sussa, and it is nice & firm.  Good quality.

  • We have the Gulliver but ended up going with a mattress from BRU. Mostly  because we forgot to look at the mattresses at IKEA when we were there buying the crib and weren't going to make another 90 minute trip back! :)

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • I have the 8th edition of BB...   and I just looked them up.    The crib/mattress gap issue was actually a problem with their non-Gulliver crib models (hence why they only recommend the Gulliver now).    Here's the quote about the mattresses:

"and we weren't thrilled with IKEA's thin and insubstantial mattress (get a standard mattress from another source)"

  • DH brought one home when he bought the dresser.  He was in a panic, thinking C needed an immediate place to sleep in the nursery.

We took it back.  It just felt, not cheap, but not substantial.  I can't explain it, I just didn't like it.
