Babies on the Brain

WWBOTBmomsD?

So, in the ever-fighting battle to actually believe that I'm really ku, I've been thinking about L&D.

I work for a private preschool/daycare affiliated with a local hospital network.  Every kid in my class belongs to an employee and a large number of this years class is somehow involved in the L&D or NICU department.  I love these moms and trust them implicitly (esp the nicu moms).  I could deliver at that specific hospital (#1) or a networked hospital (#2) (that is well-known for their birthing center).

For both of my friends births, I was her coach and she had her kids at the competing hosptials new women and children's hospital.  She had an enjoyable experience, no complaints and as her coach, I was pleased with the service and quality of care she got.  They are known in town as THE childbirth hospital (#3).

So wwyd?  The difference in distances (from my apt) are minimal.  From work, I could walk to L&D @ #1, from my parents, I'd be closer to #2 or #3 (no joke, they are across the street from each other).  I've heard nothing but good things about all three and while I'd like to financially support the hospital that keeps me employed, I don't know if I'd want to have one of my moms holding my knees or wiping the poo off the table (even though I know they're all incredibly professional).

Only a few of my mom's know I'm ku yet, but I'm sure they'll ask where I'm delivering once they know officially.

Edit:  I forgot to add---part of the other reason I want to decide is they both have different classes and programs, but they are free if you use them for L&D.

  • sounds like all three are great choices.   I'm not sure what I'd do in your shoes.

maybe once the cat is out of the bag, the mom's will sway you toward #1 anyway.

  • Honestly, I'd go with #1 or #2.  You clean up after their kids every day in a professional environment so them cleaning up after you shouldn't be something that sways you.

  • For me, the best NICU is most important, but I don't know if I'd be as concerned if it weren't for my history.  It sounds like they're all good options.

From what I can tell/have heard/have read, the NICU's are comparable.  It's just a matter of knowing *some* the NICU staff at #1

That being said, I'm sure if I had a question or concern, I could ask the staff I know, even if I was at another place.

  • Does the person who will deliver you go to all three hospitals?  There are a lot of close hospitals to where I live and my OB only delivered at 2 of them so it limited my choices down.

Oh yeah, I meant to say that he delivers at all three places.

  • If the NICUs are comparable then I would go to the women and children's hospital, but I always feel that specialized = better, or at least it should.

I agree. Especially since you had that coaching experience there and kind of got to see that place in action.  But, it doesn't sound like you can really go wrong. Maybe take a tour at all three and go with your gut?

  • I don't have anything valuable to add. It sounds like you have three good choices. I like the idea of touring all three and then trying to make a decision.

I feel like I would want to go where I know people, but I can understand that you may feel uncomfortable that they will be very up close and personal!
