Help - nipple pain at 10 months

DS has 2 bottom teeth but has never bit me. I checked his latch several times and he's not putting his teeth on me (tongue is still over the gums/teeth), but my right side nipple is tender, red, and a little inflamed on the side toward his teeth. We always nurse in a standard cradle hold and I feel like he's way too big for a football hold. It hurts to nurse or pump. We haven't had any problems like this until yesterday. I'm debating putting a nipple shield on for a day and see if that helps. What do you think? Any suggestions?

  • I wonder if he's teething and a new tooth is getting ready to break through the gums, thus he's changed the way he latches. It might be a subtle change, but just enough to cause tenderness to you. I recommend giving him lots of cold teething toys to bite down on just prior to nursing. But I guess the nipple shield could be a good idea as long as he will tolerate the slower flow of milk suddenly.

I notice tenderness whenever my son is about to get a new tooth. It stinks.
