R/P How often did/do you see your peri/MFM?

I have my first OB appt tomorrow and I am going to ask about seeing a MFM, but the closest one to me is an hour and a half (I live in the middle of nowhere lol)  I was just wondering if it's a once a month kind of thing or once a week.  I can't imagine that drive every week with a toddler.  Obviously I will do it if that's what I have to do.  How often do you see yours.  Also, how often do you get scans, every time you go?

I only saw an MFM so I'm not a huge help on this.  But, how much experience does you OB have with multiple pregnancies?  I think whether or not you see an MFM has a lot to do with how experienced your OB is with dealing with the high risk twin pregnancy.

Congrats and welcome to the multiples board!

  • I saw an OB only until 16 weeks, then saw an MFM every 3 weeks until 23 weeks when I dropped my OB and went solely with an MFM (different than the first one I saw.) I saw him every 2-3 weeks until I had the boys.

See, this is the thing, even if you have a high risk pregnancy, until 12 weeks, in my OB's practice, you see a midwife until then, after 12 weeks, I see 3 different OB's in rotation and am only really comfortable with one of them because he knows my LONG history very well.  I don't want to leave because of him.  SO I'm thinking I may go to both and see if I can be "special" when I go to my OB's office and just see that one doc, but I doubt it.

Thanks for the warm welcome, I can't get over your siggy pic, that is so cute!

  • I saw a MFM at 12 w for my NT scan.  I start seeing them every 2 weeks for cervical checks this week.  I will also have all my ultrasounds by the MFM.  My OB's office has a lot of experience with twin pregnancies, but I like that I see a high risk expert also.
  • i think it will depend on how 'high risk' you actually are.  Many people PG with twins NEVER see a peri.  I had IDs in there plus it was a triplet PG so i saw them pretty often - once a month i think for awhile then every other week once i hit 26ish weeks.  (Hard to remember! LOL)  The biggest issue for me was to monitor my girls for TTTS.

Good luck - hopefully you will have a nice easy twin pregnancy.  :)

  • I saw my MFM every four weeks until 31 weeks.  My OB I saw every month until about 28 weeks, then I saw her weekly and biweekly, depending on what was going on.  Right now I am every other week with the OB and every three weeks with the MFM.  I am sure that the MFM will want to see me more often as it gets closer, but I have had very few to no problems, so this schedule worked out for me.  My appointments were made so that I was being seen every two weeks by someone, either the OB or the MFM. I get scans each time with the MFM which take anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours.  The OB usually does a quick ultrasound if we have trouble differentiating between the heartbeats, but lately it has not been needed.

  • I see my OB every other week and my peri every three weeks. I have been seeing my peri every three weeks since the first time I saw him which was when I was around 9 weeks or so. I have just recently started seeing my OB every other week prior to that I was seeing her every 4 weeks.
  • I saw a peri once a month for the last 4 months.  Actually, I had my level II u/s done at her place, and only saw her twice.

  • I only see the MFM doctors for my u/s.  I saw them once for the nt scan and then will see them next week for my anatomy scan.  Not sure how often I'll be getting u/s after that, but thats the only time I see them.  I see my OB every 4 weeks right now and then at 26 weeks will see her every 2 weeks.
  • I started going for monthly growth scans at 20 weeks.  Then, at about 32 weeks, I started going weekly for biophysical profiles.  I had several scans very early on, then for the most part it was just a monthly growth scan until the BPPs started.  Several of the OBs in my practice did rely on a quick (poor quality) u/s just to check heartbeats at every prenatal checkup (to make sure they were seeing/hearing two and not just one).

  • I only see MFM because they do all the ultrasounds - one of the docs from my OB practice will deliver my twins.   (My OB practice and the MFM are in the same hospital, and MFM did the NT and big u/s for my singleton, too.)   I go to my OB every 4 weeks.  She said it was common to switch to every 2 weeks at 28, but things were looking good and I get u/s every 3 weeks, so I'm waiting til 32 to see her again.   I'm sure I'll start going more often now that I'm almost at 32.
  • Thank you for all the replies girls!!!  I think I'm going to end up doing a co-care kind of thing because I shouldn't be coded as "high risk", but I wanted to know what to ask at this appt and now I know!!

  • I also only see an MFM.  I've been going every 2 weeks until 32 weeks, and now every week.  I got a scan every time I went - growth scans every 4 weeks and cervical length checks every 2 weeks.  HTH!

  • I only see a peri.  I've seen him every 2 weeks since 20 weeks.  When I hit 34 weeks, I see him weekly. I get scans every time I go.
  • I see my MFM every two weeks (with a scan every time) in addition to my regular OB.  This is a blessing for me as my OB is very nice and helpful but not extremely well versed regarding twins.

  • With the twins i went once a month to MFM from day one. Saw my regular OB monthly until 20 weeks than it went to every other week until 28 weeks than went weekly. I had monthly growth scans at every MFM visit. I had BPP and NST weekly from 33 weeks but this was performed at the hospital which i was delivering at so it wasn't far from my house!

  • I see my MFM every week with an ultrasound every week.  This was my choice to give me peace of mind and who couldn't resist seeing their babies every week?
