xp top of stairs gate & space below?

I just had some guys install ours (we're not handy and it required a gate, extension & adapter thing for the spindle so we figured make sure it's done right) and I went up to look & they both (2 sets of stairs) seem very high off the ground. There is a baseboard underneath & I guess they didn't want to drill it into the baseboard (or maybe hte kit was set up that way, I have to look) so there is probably 6 inches or more below the floor & gate. It really looks like an adventurous kid (which DS is) could easily wiggle his way under that if I take my eyes off of him for a second, and go head first down the stairs. Is this normal?

Re: xp top of stairs gate & space below?

  • We purposefully left a gap in ours so our cats could get up and down. One is getting older and could probably jump over going upstairs, but if she jumped over the gate going down, she could fall all the way down.

Even though we have the gate at the top, I don't let Elizabeth get that far away from me when we're upstairs (we don't really go up there except for bath and bed) so I'm not worried about her fitting under that gap.

  • Good point...my issue is the stairs are right outside our bonus room (playroom) door so I didn't want to have to be stressed out about closing the door or someone getting out if I ran to the bathroom or to grab something out of another room.
  • not sure if that is normal but our gates don't have much that much space..at least not enough for DD to even try to get through..I would have that checked again because kids are really curious and if they want to they will find a way..what is the purpose of the gates if they can still get through and possibly fall? kwim
  • Yeah...I looked at the instructions (no clear guidelines but I'm not sure if the one piece had preset drill holes or if you do it yourself- I suspect he was avoiding drilling into our baseboards) and then emailed him to ask about it. He's coming back tomorrow to do some other stuff so I'm really hoping he just just move them down. Luckily both are drilled into wood that is attached to the wall on one side and an adapter thing on the other side so there won't be additional holes in the wall needed except in the baseboard which I don't mind for safety's sake.

    Thanks.

  • we have this one:

ended up bolting it to the wall for addes security and there isn't much wiggle room in the bottom

    good luck!!
