D.C. Area Babies

Vacation with baby, need ideas please!!

Hubby and I are trying to plan a summer vacation. Ideally, we would like to be able to drive somewhere and spend a week. DD will be 7 mos on Friday so we will need somewhere that is baby friendly. I love the beach, and DD loves water, but I'm worried it will be too hot. Anyone have any good experiences or recommendations? We have looked at Bethany Beach area but are still a bit unsure as we don't know anyone that has been there.

Re: Vacation with baby, need ideas please!!

  • What is your DD's nap schedule.  For us, going to the beach is not too much of a concern since DD naps during the hottest part of the day - 1-3.  We just go in the morning from 8:30-11:00, go home, rinse off, have lunch and play quietly to nap time.  When she wakes up we usually head back down from 4-6, do dinner, bath and bedtime.  While DD naps, we read, one of us may go for a walk, etc.  We also bring a large umbrella for shade so when DD plays in the sand, she has some cover.

Do any of the beaches near here usually wind up with a tidal lagoon?  Last summer that was DD's favorite place to play since the water was warm (we were in Massachusetts) and only 6 inches deep. It was like the baby pool, there were a lot of little kids there.

  • We just got back from a weekend in Bethany and C had a total blast. Generally, we fit the beach around his nap schedule (although his schedule was totally off, so it probably didn't matter).   We goofed off in the mornings - eating a late breakfast, going to the outlets, etc. and generally ended up on the beach in the mid afternoon. One afternoon we brought his stroller on the beach and he took his afternoon nap in it there.

If you can, look for a place in Middlesex. It's a small community that has private beach access (at least the house we stayed in did) and the beach is a whole lot less crowded than the rest of Bethany.

    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • We go to OBX every summer with my family. Like pp said, the kids nap during the hottest part of day. We go down to the beach early in the morning, come back to eat lunch/nap, and then go back to the beach sometime after 4. We have beach umbrellas to stay in the shade.

  • We recently stayed at the Avenue Inn in Rehoboth for 2 nights. I liked that it was 2-3 blocks from the beach and right in the town area so restaurants and shops were close by. They have rooms where there is a door separating the main room from a little sitting area. I didn't book that kind of room but I wish I had so that DD could sleep in a separate area so that we could have the light on in the evening and not disturb her. The Avenue Inn also has a free continental breakfast every morning which was nice and it has an indoor heated pool which DD loved. The boardwalk in Rehoboth is nice too and we did a long walk there every morning after breakfast. All in all, we had a great time on our trip and we'll probably do it again later in the summer.

  • We just got back from 4 days in the OBX.  We did the beach in the morning, lunch/shopping or sight seeing in the afternoon so DS could nap in the car or stroller and then the beach again in the evening if wanted.  It worked out great.  We ended up staying in a condo so DS had his own room.  It was our first time in the OBX and we loved it! :)

  • We did OBX when Ben was 8 months, and last year we went to Myrtle Beach. This year, we'll be back at OBX. Like pp said, usually naptimes are at the peak of the day. For me that's fine - I can get some good reading indoors or on a deck! :)
